Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 ? 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer, widely known as R. S. Surtees. He was the second son of Anthony Surtees of Hamsterley Hall, a member of an old County Durham family. Some moderate foxing on endpapers, remainder tight and bright with name & address on inside cover. 339 pp. This is the account of Surteess' life and some of his unfinished work and rough drafts discovered after his death discovered by Cuming. A fabulous read and welcome addition to any sporting library.

From Preface: If it be urged that an account of the life and works of one who has been dead for sixty years is overlate, the answer is that the immortality of John Jorrocks extends to his creator; and while the popularity of Jorrocks endures, interest in the writer who gave him birth also endures.The novelist was reticent, even with the members of his own family, concerning whatever literary work he had in hand; hense none at Hamsterley Hall could have been aware that during the last months of his life he was engaged in writing a book to be entitled "Sporting and Social Recollections," which, as appears from his papers, he proposed to publish under his own name, thus laying aside the anonymity he had theretofore preserved. Surtees died in 1864 having written largely about country life - although section IV, forty pages, discusses Victorian railway travel. In this volume (published originally in 1929). E D Cuming brings together some of his shorter pieces. This reprints them. Around twenty nice engravings. No index. Condition: a very nice copy with no blemishes - brown cloth casing and text are clean and smart. Book encased in plastic wrapper.

Surtees, was an author whose books ran counter to the currents of his age in their lack of idealism, absence of sentimentality, and almost wilful flouting of conventional moralism.
