Un tertium datur che, entro e oltre l'indiscussa vis polemica attraverso la quale gli scritti e il personaggio di Lukács hanno impresso sul trascorso selciato filosofico, estetico e politico la loro contraddittoria pregnanza, permetta di rileggere e di riconsiderare in «totalità» la figura del pensatore ungherese, restituendo al dibattito intellettuale i lineamenti storico-teorici dell'evoluzione della riflessione lukácciana. Una «vita complessa, multiforme, non rettilinea, non omogenea ma autonoma», sottolinea l'autore, fornendo tra numerosi aneddoti biografici, un'articolata ricostruzione dell'itinerario scientifico del pensatore Lukács. In ciò metaforicamente fedele al principio lukácciano secondo cui giusto compito è «ristabilire nella vita stessa l'uomo totale, l'uomo completo oltre ogni deformazione e frantumazione», lo studio di Szabó lascia scorgere in toto, attraverso un ricorso serrato alle fonti e in un puntuale confronto con l'ermeneutica critica lukácciana, l'equilibro instabile sul quale giacciono i nuclei teorici essenziali del pensiero di Lukács. Né il «mito ideologico del giovane Lukács», né una sopravvalutazione della riflessione matura del filosofo sono atti a rendere la complessità del profilo dottrinale dell'opera lukácciana la quale, benché non si presti neppure ad un'operazione di riduzione sintetica unitaria, registra al suo interno una peculiare costante. Peculiare, in quanto costante e peculiare costante in quanto in sé ambivalente: è in simile orizzonte che il saggio di Szabó rintraccia la componente originale delle considerazioni e della personalità di Lukács. È in questione qui una singolare tensione etica che, accompagnando per intero a mo' di ragione interna l'opera del filosofo, costituisce senza soluzione di continuità e non senza apparente incongruenza la ragione stessa dei tournants e delle scelte più eticamente discutibili dell'operato di György Lukács. Tattica e etica, «fermezza e flessibilità», per l'appunto; diade contraddittoria che, se al cospetto della «coerenza, verità intransigenza e responsabilità» dell'esempio gramsciano fa di Lukács il «grande sopravvissuto», costituisce allo stesso tempo l'asse portante dell' ontologia, dell'estetica e dell'antropologia luckácciana.
