Nel 1958 Endre Tot inizia a studiare all'Accademia d'arte, dove entra rapidamente in conflitto con la dottrina del realismo socialista e viene espulso. In seguito, studia al Collegio delle Arti Applicate di Budapest. Negli anni '60, Tot si fa una reputazione come pittore di arte informale. Nel 1970 smette di dipingere dichiarando lo stato zero, che avrà un grande significato per la sua arte futura.D'ora in poi, il nulla e l'assenza da un lato costituiranno i due poli del suo lavoro creativo. Crea superfici nere che rappresentano una pittura assente e sfidano lo spettatore con i loro titoli, così come oggetti-libro in cui il testo è reso quasi illeggibile da innumerevoli zeri scritti sopra. Per eludere la censura postale ungherese, Tot si recò segretamente a Belgrado in treno e lì inviò il suo materiale di Mail art in Occidente. Nel 1972/73 le opere di Tot furono esposte alla mostra Fluxus che girò diverse città dell'Inghilterra. Nel 1976 è ospite della galleria Ecart di Ginevra, fondata da John M. Armleder, dove realizza le sue prime azioni di strada. Nel 1978 è ospite del DAAD di Berlino. Book.
