Durante casi tres años, desde agosto de 1941 marzo de 1944, combatieron en el frente ruso bajo mando alemán 47.000 soldados españoles, por espacio de dos años estuvieron en la línea del asedio de Leningrado. Sufrieron 22.000 bajas de las cuales hubo 4.500 muertos en acción o fallecieron a consecuencia de las heridas , enfermedades o congelaciones. En 1954 fueron repatriados menos de 300 prisioneros que permanecían aún en la Unión Soviética. En este libro se narra la historia de estos voluntarios españoles, teniendo como fuentes informativas los archivos españoles, alemanes y diversas publicaciones además, de entrevistas de los autores con personas que directa o hdirectamente intervinieron o tuvieron algún contacto con la División Azul. Según los historiadores norteamericanos Gerald R. Kleinfeld y Lewis A. Tambs el envío de la División Azul a Rusia, además de la compensación de la ayuda alemana a la España nacional durante la Guerra Civil, desempeñó un papel importante en el juego diplomático de Franco, para librar al país de una invasión y evitar los horrores de otra guerra. Una vez en Rusia el gran valor e ímpetu mosteado por los divisionarios españoles hicieron que se ganaran la admiración y respeto de sus camaradas alemanes, ante su audacia en| el ataque y firmeza en la defensa tanto en el Volchov como ante Leningrado. Todo esto, hizo meditar a Hitler que el alto precio de una invasión de España sería prohibitivo. El Ejército español, por carencia de armamento moderno, no se hacía ilusiones de poder detener un ataque alemán, en tanto la Wehrmacht estuviese al acecho en los Pirineos. Se da un amplio panorama sobre los aspectos militares de las campañas en las que intervino la fuerza expedicionaria española, 9rupo de Ejércitos Norte, como i Divi®dn se8Ún el orden de combate alemán.
