Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a rare insight into the vocabulary and grammar of the aboriginal South Australian language as it was spoken in the mid-19th century by the Ngarrindjeri people. While the work is seminal, its significance extends beyond containing the first attempt to record this language in written form. The author provides valuable insights into the customs and systems of thought of the aboriginal people. The book consists of an outline of aboriginal grammar and two parts. Part one comprises a dictionary of over 800 words, while part two is an examination of the structure of the language. It reveals a complex system of morphology, with the noun system being particularly complex and providing fascinating glimpses into cultural concepts and categorizations. The book's historical and linguistic importance makes it a critical text for scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the aboriginal peoples and the preservation of their ancient languages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Adelaide, Libraries Board of South Australia, 1962 (facsimile edition)/ 1841. Octavo, [iii], 13, [1] pages (printed one side only on leaves uncut along the leading edges). The pagination is slightly reorganised in this early xerographic facsimile. Red cloth lettered in gilt on the front cover; cloth lightly marked; tiny tape stain on the front pastedown (a trifling production flaw); an excellent copy. South Australian Facsimile Editions No. 2. Peade SA2 (not recording this date, but noting the 1965 edition; stating a total print run of 355 copies, including 213 for a '1967 reprint?'; and recording copies in blue vinyl laminate and blue cloth, but not red cloth as here). Ferguson 3306 ('A very early and rare pamphlet', citing only the Mitchell Library copy). This facsimile states it is 'Microfilmed . from a copy held in the Public Library of South Australia' (later the State Library of South Australia), but we cannot locate either of these recorded copies in Trove. Ferguson transcribes the name of the author on the title page as 'B.T. Thachelmann, [Sic - pen-altered to C.G. Teichelmann]'. The original book from which this facsimile edition was prepared shows the author as 'R.T. Tiechelmann', with the initials corrected in pen to read 'C.G.'. More significantly, that original copy contained some interesting annotations on the title page and a rear blank, reproduced in the facsimile edition. The latter runs to some 90 words: 'After being more acquainted with the language & more intimate with some of the leading Aborigines, I asked one of them to tell my [sic] candidly what their belief was with regard to the future world!'. And this he did do.

By C. G. Teichelmann, C. W. Schurmann, of the Lutheran Missionary Society, Dresden. Adelaide: published by the Authors, at the Native Location, 1840 Wrpps, 8vo. [2],viii,[2],24,[2],76pp. errata leaf. "In presenting the following pages to the public, the writers deem it their duty to state the objects and motives for doing so. The chief motives are - to keep up the good understanding, and to facilitate the intercourse, between the Aborigines and Europeans; to give to the latter a medium of communication, and, especially, assistance to those who may be inclined to acquire the language; to enliven the hopes of those who wish the christianization and civilization of their colored fellow-men, showing them that a race of human beings possessing a language so regular in its formation and construction as that of the South Australian natives, cannot be incapable of either; and to refute premature and unjust detractions concerning the mental capabilities of the Aborigines of Australia." Contemporary signature dated 1841 to front endpaper with a note in German. Wrappers slightly marked and worn, a very nice copy of the first edition in the publisher's blue wrappers. COPAC lists four copies. [Ferguson: 3102] We have been selling antiquarian books on Africa, Oceania, archaeology, anthropology, travel and the ancient world for over forty years.
