The engraved title-page is signed by Romeyn de Hooghe; one folded plate is signed by Cornelis Galle.

Vignetta calcografica al frontespizio,… raffigurante un lettore di libri con il motto "Optimi consultores mortui". Opera adorna da 27 incisioni nel testo, raffiguranti medaglioni, personaggi ed ornamenti, e tre fuori testo ripiegate, con scene della vita di Cristo. Le tavole sono incise da Cornelius Galle, sempre su disegni di Romeyn de Hooghe. Fresca impressione. Rara edizione di un intrigante studio seicentesco, stampato la prima volta nel 1655, sui cappelli e copricapi laici e religiosi, dotato di un ricco apparato iconografico. Ne è autore, sotto lo pseudonimo di Anselmo Solerio, il teologo gesuita francese Theophile Raynaud (Sospel, presso Nizza, 1583-1663), che fu docente di grammatica e letteratura ad Avignon, ed in seguito di filosofia e di teologia a Lione e a Roma. Nouvelle édition de cette curieuse histoire des coiffes sacrées et profanes depuis l'Antiquité (chapeaux, casques, bonnets, capuches, turbans, tiares, voiles, etc.) rédigée sous le pseudonyme d'Anselmus Solerius Cemeliensis par le théologien jésuite Théophile Raynaud (1583-1663) et publiée une première fois à Leyde en 1655.Frontispice dessiné et gravé à l'eau-forte par Romeyn de Hooghe, vignette de titre, 26 figures dans le texte dont 18 à pleine page et 4 planches dont la dernière repliée représentant la mise au tombeau du Christ est signée de Corneille Galle. Relié avec le traité sur les toges romaines illustré d'une planche repliée de l'érudit italien Girolamo Bosso (1588-1646) publié à six reprises entre 1614 et 1671, que l'on trouve habituellement à la suite du traité de Raynaud, sortis des mêmes presses amstellodamoises d'Andreas Frisius (Lipperheide 1650; Colas 399).Provenance : Amédée Faulque de Jonquières, bibliothécaire du dépôt des cartes et plans de la marine, ancien gérant et rédaction de l?Union, mort en 1873 (ex-libris).Bel exemplaire.
