paperback. Condizione: Very Good. [Scriptorium Saint Francis] Volume One, 2003. Softcover, 64 pp; 28 cm. No edition stated. Black and red printed wrappers with abstract typographic design. Black and white illustratios. In very good condition with a small 1/2" square chip to the paper over the bottom of the spine where a price sticker was removed taking the thin top layer with it. Edited by Thomas Ingmire, a forerunner in the modern Western calligraphy movement, this volume represents the first in a planned series exploring contemporary visual language through calligraphy. Codici (Italian for "codes") is conceived as a "notebook" project combining Ingmire's teaching experiences with theoretical and experimental investigations. Contributions include essays and visual works by Manfredo Massironi, Christian Dotremont, Hans-Joachim Burgert, and Ingmire himself, exploring topics such as expressive line, illegibility, typographic psychology, and spatial rhythm. Contents include: The pleasure of showing and looking at words by Manfredo Massironi; Moving towards a 21st-century calligraphy: an introductory argument; The word as image: an assessment of a work by Christian Dotremont; The calligraphic line: a look at some of Hans-Joachim Burgert's ideas on calligraphy; The space of writing: the Ditchling commission; Notes and Acknowledgements.

Softcover. Condizione: Fine. #11 of 116 copies signed by both Annwn and Ingmire, printed letterpress using Tiepolo type on Frankfurt Cream and bound in hand-made Cave Paper, with hand-made Lokta endsheets. Fine copy. Publisher's description: "The piece of papyrus called the Saint John's Fragment was acquired in an Egyptian market in 1920 by Bernard Grenfell, an English scientist and Egyptologist. It now resides in the collection of the Rylands Library at the University of Manchester in England. This scrap of paper-like material, measuring only 3 ½ by 2 ½ inches, is made from the pith of the papyrus plant. It is dated from between 100 CE and 150 CE and is generally accepted as the earliest extant record of a canonical New Testament text. Written on both sides of the papyrus, it must have been part of a codex, that is, a collection of sewn and folded leaves, not a scroll or an isolated sheet. That being the case, it would be among the earliest surviving examples of a literary codex. It was written in Greek in a script known as Hadrianic, named after Hadrian (76 CE-138 CE), the Roman Emperor of that era.Anglo Welsh poet, critic and publisher David Annwn has responded to this fragment in a poem that always seems to bear just below the surface remembrance of a statement from the Rylands Library: 'The importance of this fragment is quite out of proportion to its size,.' And yet it exists, considering all which could have destroyed it, against the odds.Thomas Ingmire's calligraphy shows the image of the actual fragment, then the restored page, then the English translation of the restored page in flaps that extend the pages in order to allow for the missing text.".
