Has all 24 full page color lithographs. This artwork was produced by Thomas Rowlandson. Thomas Rowlandson (17571827) was a prolific English artist, caricaturist, and illustrator best known for his satirical and often bawdy depictions of 18th- and early 19th-century British life. Printed on thick quality archival paper that has no foxing or browning. Has a tiny little stamp in the back of the book that states, "From the Books of Robinson Co, Los Angeles".and some other tiny tiny print that I can't make out without a magnifying class. The first two editions of this work appeared in 1845, the third in 1861.Uncommon.Quarter paper vellum bound with gilt titles. Heartily illustrated with 47 plates, both monochrome and colour, including a frontispiece of the author (also, a plate missed from the work's 'List of Illustrations' titled 'Perdita Robinson' by J. T. Smith, on an unnumbered page [pp. 82-83]). Collated complete.Composed by a previous keeper of prints for the British Museum who was born in the back of a Hackney carriage, this work offers a nostalgic recollection of London, abounding with references to some of the city's best known areas and buildings. Unifying the two works, besides the common theme and the fact that the second work, Real Life, was in an imitation and knock off of the first work, is that they share a common, quite decorative, full red morocco binding by Wood of London. Bindings with gilt decorative devices in four of six spine compartments, and board corners, front and back -- horse's head, cocktail glasses, boxing gloves, crossed swords. Two devices on leather corners of inside boards. 8vo. The two works have slightly different dimensions. Life is 233 by 148 mm, Real Life, 225 by 148 mm. 36 and 32 hand-colored plates in the two works respectively, for a total of 68 hand-colored plates. The three volumes have a somewhat complicated origin, as evident in the edition enumeration or identification, with the Real Life being a mixed state. We know the second volume is the fourth edition from its description in the publisher's advertisement. Condition: typical wear along joints. Some minor gradation of leather color, with spines slightly darkern. (We do not think there has been sunning.) Occasional light foxing or soiling, but the set overall reads clean.
