Il genere del ritratto a figura intera, in cui il soggetto è ripreso dalla testa ai piedi in posizione frontale  con alle spalle un particolare sfondo, è tanto antico quanto la ritrattistica. Ma nel caso cinese, al fine di ridurre i costi di questo tipo di ritratto, gli studi fotografici offrivano un formato verticale inedito, in cui la cornice "restringeva" il soggetto dritto in piedi con le braccia lungo il corpo. Il risultato era una stampa ai sali d'argento, una sorta di piccola bara fotografica, con una dimensione media di 7 cm di altezza per 2,5 cm di larghezza, sia in bianco e nero che colorata a mano. Questa fortuita raccolta di 60 ritratti anonimi rivela - attraverso i codici di abbigliamento e le abitudini comportamentali raffigurate - frammenti della storia e dell'ideologia della società cinese. Nel 2015, l'artista francese Thomas Sauvin ha acquisito un album prodotto nei primi anni '80 da uno sconosciuto studente di fotografia dell'Università di Shanghai. L'album comprendeva dei negativi originali, alcune stampe, e i commenti scritti a mano da un professore anonimo. Il tutto mostrava la diligenza dello studente nel dominare le regole del ritratto convenzionale. L'album riceve una seconda vita grazie alle mani di Kensuke Koike, un artista giapponese che lavora combinando il collage e la fotografia ritrovata.  La serie ?No More, No Less?, nata dall'incontro tra Koike e Sauvin, include nuove stampe all'argento realizzate con i negativi originali dell'album. Queste stampe sono state quindi rielaborate da Koike, che, con una semplice lama e un nastro adesivo, ha decostruito e reinventato le immagini. Questi interventi rispettano una regola formale: nulla viene rimosso, nulla viene aggiunto, ?No More, No Less.  La serie comprende altre due edizioni realizzate con lo stesso materiale fotografico e pubblicate da Skinnerboox e The (M) editions. Nel 2014 uno di loro era al mercato Baoguosi di Pechino. Aveva scoperto "uno strano album". Una volta che Sauvin ebbe tra le mani l'oggetto, capì subito che stava guardando un insolito ed elaborato kit da cucito di un couturier, un'opera interamente realizzata a mano, un labirinto di carta ripiegata in cui fili, aghi e modelli ritagliati dai giornali erano intrecciati l'uno con l'altro. Contemplando questo oggetto, vedeva qualcosa di più del mero armamentario necessario alle casalinghe nella Cina degli anni '60: ritrovava una magia simile a quella degli armadietti delle curiosità rinascimentali e degli armadietti medici cinesi, composti da più cassetti che nascondevano segreti di ogni tipo . È così che ha sviluppato l'idea di riempire questo oggetto bizzarro con fedeli facsimili di stampe vintage, appartenenti alla collezione acquisita in tutta la Cina per diversi anni. "Xian" dispiega e svela la memoria moderna e contemporanea della Cina con immagini che sono vere e proprie testimonianze contro l'oblio. Sealed tightly with a knot, the bag had settled there unnoticed for many decades. Upon opening the bag, over 300 photos were discovered, taken by an anonymous member of the Xi'an Physical Education University's department of Photography. All the images, meticulously depicting various athletes in action, often defying gravity, were shot on the same field during a bright day of June 1960. To date, these images are the only photographic record that collector and artist Thomas Sauvin found from the time of The Great Leap Forward (1958-1962). During these years, a chaotic industrialization campaign meant to transform China from an agrarian economy to a new communist regime rooted in industry and large-scale agricultural production led to the deadliest famine of human history. Any photographic documentation from these years remains extremely rare. In this posthumous collaboration with an anonymous photographer, this publication invites us to contemplate a strangely metaphorical aerial ballet on the margins of history.…
