"An Australian Song' is a remarkable colonial curiosity, discovered in a private collection by Marjorie Tipping during her research into the work in Australia of German expatriate artist and naturalist Ludwig Becker, who perished on the Burke and Wills Expedition in 1861. Becker's Song, originally published in Melbourne in 1860, took the form of a strip cartoon, containing nineteen pictures and thirty-eight verses in German. It relates the tribulations of a German migrant to Australia, who suffers the frightful sea journey, digs on the goldfields, finds little gold but eventually marries and settles happily. The original Australian Song is a rare and delightful early Australian publication and worthy of Marjorie Tipping's thoughtful study." Weight (before packaging): 490g.
