Februar 1940 wird die Heinkel 111 (Nr. 3232) vom Löwen-Kampfgeschwader 26 als erstes deutsches Flugzeug seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg über England von einer Hurricane abgeschossen - ihr Pilot ist Peter Townsend. Damit beginnt einer der folgenreichsten Luftkämpfe der Geschichte, der während der Sommermonate des Jahres 1940 in der legendären Schlacht um England gipfelt. Jenes dramatischen, drei Monate dauernden Zweikampfes, in dem die R.A.F. die Lufthoheit über die Britischen Inseln zurückgewinnt und damit den Ausgang des Zweiten Weltkriegs entscheidend beeinflußt. Er wurde zum Höhepunkt einer Entwicklung, die sich seit zwanzig Jahren auf britischer wie auf deutscher Seite abgezeichnet hatte. Nach dem Versailler Verbot einer eigenen Luftwaffe hatte bereits die Reichswehr in einer geheimen Abteilung des Reichswehrministeriums mit Stützpunkten wie Lipezk in Rußland systematisch eine neue Luftwaffe aufgebaut. Junkers, Dornier, Heinkel, Messerschmitt hatten in aller Stille neue Flugzeugtypen entwickelt und die Voraussetzungen für Hermann Görings Luftwaffe geschaffen. In Großbritannien war trotz der heftigen Opposition der Politiker und der Admiralität eine neue Luftstreitkraft, die R.A.F., entstanden, ein Sieg der Phantasie und Voraussicht der Luftmarschälle Lord Trenchard und Sir Hugh Dowding, die ein unerschütterliches Vertrauen in ihre Flieger und deren Jagd-maschinen gesetzt hatten.
