A compact scholarly catalogue and visual survey devoted to Masaccio (Tommaso di Ser Giovanni di Simone, 1401-1428), one of the pivotal painters of the early Italian Renaissance. Procacci discusses the artist's life and work, provides biographical notes and a catalogue divided into Masaccio's accepted paintings, lost works, attributed works and locations, followed by selected criticism, bibliography, and a substantial sequence of reproductions. Among the works illustrated are the Madonna with Child, St. Anne and Angels, the Crucifixion, and frescoes from Florence's celebrated Brancacci Chapel. The University of Illinois Ricker Library notably includes this Procacci/Colacicchi volume in its collection of catalogues raisonnes, which is a useful indication of its continuing bibliographical character rather than its being merely a general-interest art book. This is the 1962 first American edition published by Hawthorn Books. The copyright page states ©1962 by Rizzoli Editore, with English-language publication rights assigned to Hawthorn Books; printed in Great Britain by Jarrold & Sons Ltd., Norwich. Contemporary Arts & Architecture listed the Hawthorn edition among books received in August 1962 at an original price of $3.95. Very Good, ex-library. No dust jacket. Original red cloth remains structurally sound with bright gilt spine titling and gilt series emblem to the lower front board. Moderate rubbing, scattered small marks and shelf wear are present, with library classification markings in white near the foot of the spine. Binding appears firm and the interior illustrations and plates remain generally clean and serviceable. This copy has a small but appealing piece of local educational history. The notation "Gift of Dorothy Rost 3/30/71" can be connected directly with Dorothy P. Rost (1937-2015), who served as secretary for Warren Hills Regional High School and its predecessor, Washington High School, from 1955-1999. Her donation of this Masaccio study in 1971 therefore occurred roughly sixteen years into a career at the institution that would ultimately span more than four decades. Retained alongside the original Warren Hills library pocket, stamps and accession number 71405, the inscription gives this otherwise modest art-history volume a specific and traceable history within the Washington, New Jersey educational community. Ugo Procacci (1905-1991) was an important Italian art historian and conservation administrator particularly associated with Florentine Renaissance painting. His significance goes well beyond authorship of popular art monographs: he became a major figure in the study, conservation and restoration of Tuscan painting and frescoes. That expertise makes him an especially appropriate scholar for Masaccio and the Brancacci Chapel.…
