Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Edition: First Edition Thus (first appearance of this Heron-Allen-edited text with Hamzeh Carr's illustrations) Pages: 193pp, with a reprint of the French text alongside the English, and 16 full-page colour plates by Hamzeh Carr Condition: Good, ex-library. Beige cloth stamped… in gilt, black and red; cloth frayed at spine head and tail, boards lightly soiled with scuff marks to the rear panel. Ex-Stirling District Library copy, with library stamp and cancellation stamp to the title page, accession number and shelf label to the pastedowns, and a barcode sticker (remnant of a removed pocket label) to the front board interior. Page edges browned throughout with occasional minor chipping to leaf corners; text and all 16 colour plates present, complete, and unmarked internally. Description: A celebrated illustrated edition of the Rubáiyát, notable for its unusual translation history: French orientalist J.B. Nicolas's prose rendering of the Persian quatrains was itself translated into English by Frederick Rolfe, the eccentric author writing as "Baron Corvo" — a version whose idiosyncratic, sensualist interpretation Edward Heron-Allen addresses directly in his introduction. Illustrated with sixteen vivid colour plates by Hamzeh Carr in a Persian miniature style. A landmark among illustrated Rubáiyát editions, of interest to collectors of Omar Khayyám translations and of Corvo/Rolfe association material. Hamzeh Carr (illustratore).

Condizione: Very Good. 193pp. Quarto [27 cm] Tan cloth over boards with lettering in gilt and vignettes stamped in gilt, red, blue, and black on the backstrip and front board. Publisher's blue topstain. Fore and bottom edges deckled. Extremities very gently bumped, rubbed, and soiled. No dust jacket. All illustrations… present. Text printed in English and French. Not much is known about the mysterious artist Hamzeh Carr, however curator Terry Wilfong (Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, University of Michigan) speculates that although Carr was long thought to be a local Egyptian artist, Wilfong's preliminary research has indicated that he was an Englishman working under a pseudonym, a convert to Islam, and a follower of Theosophy. Small, Maynard & Company edition, printed after the edition published by John Lane, The Bodley Head in London.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Duodecimo; xiv, 464 pages, variant linen-backed boards, paper label on spine, t.e.g., edges untrimmed, the extra paper spine label appears to have been used. Two Lane order brochures for other titles laid in. Bi-lingual. A John Lane book but printed in Boston. " [Omar] was an Orie…ntal, and it is sadly difficult for a Westerner to interpret what an Oriental says. His words may have a specious sound, familiar to the ear, but may hide a meaning which he would not care for the uninitiated to understand. . It is plain, therefore, that one is at liberty to choose between the literal and the allegorical reading of 'Umar's graceful and often epigrammatic lines. Frederick Baron Corvo shows that he is a masterly translator. He often penetrates through the decorative filigree of the French style to something approaching 'Umar's own marvellous concentration condensation." - Introduction. J. B. Nicolas considered himself "Soufique". This edition was printed in Boston, and was issued one day before the British edition.
