Aggiungi al carrello( Erste Auflage. In lateinischer Sprache ). Mai 1626 in Gera; 1. ). - selten - ( Gewicht 1109 Gramm ) ( Lagerort AZ - eingepackt ) ( Weitere Bilder auf Anfrage ) / Artikel 26896 /// (First edition. In Latin). The first part comprises 3 blank white leaves, 17 unnumbered leaves (title page with engraved vignette / Ad Lectorum / Index), 800 pages with an engraved end vignette, and 4 unnumbered blank white leaves. The bound part includes a title page with an engraved vignette, 3 unnumbered leaves with a title page for Lithiasis (Elzevirium, Amsterdam, 1648), 110 pages, and 4 unnumbered blank white leaves. All together in a contemporary parchment binding with a narrow, hand-titled spine *B.v. Helmont, Ortus*. The binding is stained, dusty, and rubbed; corners and edges are partly bumped. The narrow spine is creased and slightly cracked, the binding is defective, and the text block is almost loose. Inside, a small handwritten note in an old hand is affixed to the inside front cover. The four endpapers are browned, somewhat stained, and have edge wear. The title page bears two old ownership inscriptions: *M. Caspar Posner*, which likely refers to Caspar Posner, also: Poßner, Possner (born May 11, 1626, in Gera; died March 1, 1700, in Jena), a German physicist and physician. There is also a somewhat illegible inscription: *Dr. Suren (?), Lübbecke, 1846*. The paper inside is partly slightly browned, a few pages are slightly stained, and some pages have underlines in an old hand. The pages of the first part each have a small, corrected page numbering at the top in a very old hand (probably by Posner). The last 20 pages and the bound section have slight water stains and browning at the bottom edge. Otherwise, the interior is in generally good condition. (Please note: Only the chapter *De Lithiasis* from the attached part is included here!). - rare - (Weight 1109 grams) (Storage location AZ - packed) (Further pictures available upon request) / Item 26896 /// (Première édition.

Condizione: Very Good. ONE OF THE FOUNDERS OF BIOCHEMISTRY Folio. 2 parts in 1, separate title to each, pp. [34], 700. Roman letter, with Italic, double column. General title with woodcut printer s device in red and black, 3 small woodcut medical instruments, decorated initials and ornaments. Tiny worm trail at blank…foot of first gathering, very light age browning, very slight water stain towards head on second half, long clean tear at lower edge to Bb2 repaired. A very good copy in contemporary Dutch vellum over boards, early ms title to spine, c1700 ms Latin note on Van Helmont to ffep verso, ms Ad Conventum Monacensem Ord[inis] Ere[mitarum] S. Aug[usti]ni 1734 to title. Jan Baptist van Helmont s complete works, edited posthumously by his son, with revisions not present in previous editions (cf. Rommelaere, p.63). In this work, Helmont established his name as one of the founders of biochemistry, although some authorities believe that he is perhaps overrated because of his vacillations between mysticism and science. [] his discovery of digestive juices in the stomach and intestine, and especially his first use of the specific gravity of urine for diagnostic purposes, mark him as a man of no insignificant importance in the history of medicine (Heirs of Hippocrates n.409). Van Helmont (1580-1644) was a chemist and physician from Brussels, trained at Leuven. Influenced by Paracelsus and iatrochemical theories - i.e., the interpretation and study of medicine and physiology in chemical terms he partly repudiated them due to his study of mysticism and the New Learning , based on experimentation, upheld by Harvey and Bacon. Part I begins with the author s biography and core ideas, including his dislike of astrology and his scientific views and understanding of physiology, physics and natural science in relation to the errors of Aristotle, Llull, Galen and Paracelsus. Here are his theories of ferment - very near to today s enzyme - a chemical substance found in the stomach and aiding digestion, as well as his theory of gas - the first recorded appearance of the word in the modern sense as an invisible substance different from atmospheric air. The remainder discuss dozens of topics spanning mental impairment ( amentia and dementia ), the seat of the soul, blood circulation (inspired by Harvey), digestion, asthma, cough, ulcers, catarrh, pharmacopoeia and dropsy. Most interesting is the account of his meeting with the Irish alchemist William Butler, who owned a lapillus , a small stone (thought to be by some the philosopher s stone), which could treat conditions such as severe poisoning. There follows Tractatus de morbis , devoted to internal pathology and remedies, beginning with the nature of illnesses and continuing with, among others, the virtues of gems, stones and herbs; death, the best nutrition for infants and the magnetic treatment of wounds. Part II comprises his Opuscula Medica Inaudita , in four parts - on kidney stones, fevers, Galen s humours and the plague which discuss physiology, diagnostics, symptomatology, treatment and prognosis. Tumulus pestis , inspired by the Amsterdam plague of 1605, was reviewed by Newton in 1667. Krivatsy 5431; Ferguson, Bib. Chemica, I, 381; Heirs of Hippocrates (1648 ed.); Wellcome (1648 ed.); Osler (1648 ed.). W. Rommelaere, Études sur J.B. Van Helmont (1868).

Aggiungi al carrellofolio. pp. 22 p.l., 814, [18], 827-1161, [23]. engraved frontis. of Jan and Franciscus van Helmont surrounded by 8 armorial family shields. woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary calf, rebacked (tears to head of spine, corners worn, text block cracked at p. 561, marginal defects to title & following leaf, some sporadic insig…nificant marginal worming, a few old marginal notes, some light foxing & browning). First Edition of the English Translation by John Chandler of the collected works of van Helmont, one of the founders of biochemistry, which was edited and posthumously published by his son. "A Belgian mystic, Helmont was nonetheless the most prominent chemist of the first half of the seventeenth century. Originally an alchemist and follower of Paracelsus in that his outlook was universal, he himself marks the transition from alchemy to the science of chemistry in the modern sense." (Heirs of Hippocrates) "He believed that the processes in diseased organs are of a chemical nature, due in each case to the action of a specific ferment, and he gave a new impetus to the application of chemical remedies to diseases, especially in asthma, cararrh and the lung diseases. In medicine, he introduced the examination of the specific gravity of urine for diagnostic purposes. He investigated the fluids in the human body and advanced the study of digestion and other physiological changes by discovering acid digestion in the stomach, coming to identifying gastric acid with hydrochloric acid, some two hundred years before the discovery of this facthe was the first to use the term 'gas' (derived from the Greek word 'chaos'). He realized that 'gas' was distinct from air and water vapour, and he distinguished the 'gases' derived from various sources, including that which we call carbon dioxideit is not surprising to find that he was much studied by Robert Boyle who adopted many of his ideas. Helmont therefore stands at the very beginning of the chemical revolution which was completed by Lavoisier in the eighteenth century." (PMM) Duveen p. 286. Wing H1400. Ferguson I p. 381. Neu 1896.
