"When the painter Victor Surbek visited me in northern Cameroon, I was staying in my black… Arcadia for the fourth time, in the dreamland of the grey Mandara Mountains. It is a little-known, rarely described, mysterious region in which ethnologists still find a primeval, unchanged existence and behavior. In the granite rubble landscape, isolated from the outside world and with almost no contact with the Mohammedan valley peoples, live a good dozen small, animistic mountain tribes who, at the time, had retreated further and further into the inaccessible mountains, badly harassed by slave raids and military campaigns by the Hausa, Mohammedan hordes from Chad and invading Fulani peoples." - translation from the author's introduction.
