The volume brings together scholars working across Chinese and comparative philosophy to examine how the ethical vocabulary of the Confucian tradition - concepts such as ren (humaneness), yi (righteousness), shu (consideration of others) and de (virtue or excellence) - has been interpreted, contested and refined across more than two millennia, and what resources it offers for present-day moral reasoning. -- Compiled from an international conference on Confucianism held at the University of Toronto in 2005, this volume asks what Confucian ethics has been over its long history and what it might still become in global philosophical debate. Rather than treating Confucianism as a static code, the contributors track how ideas about virtue, human nature, emotion and political order have been argued over from the early Analects and Mencius, through Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism, to modern New Confucian thought. Issues such as the character of the junzi, the relation between inner feelings and outer ritual, and the status of music, friendship and self cultivation are examined as live philosophical questions, not simply as matters of textual exegesis. A second strand of the book places Confucian ethics in broader comparative and forward looking contexts. Essays relate Neo-Confucian moral theory to Mahayana Buddhism, explore Korean and Japanese readings of the Confucian classics, and set Confucian views of custom and personal autonomy alongside those of Montaigne. The closing discussion of globalisation and the virtues of reciprocity and generosity explicitly asks what resources Confucianism might offer for intercultural ethics today. Methodologically, the volume brings together analytic moral philosophy, phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches, close philology and intellectual history, showing how each can illuminate different ethical dimensions of the tradition. For readers in Chinese philosophy, comparative ethics or religious studies it offers both a map of key debates within Confucian thought and concrete examples of how those debates can inform contemporary reflection on character, community and global responsibility. -- Contents: Introduction / Vincent Shen; Part I.
