Prize plate stuck to front pastedown. Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Boards have noticeable shelf wear with rubbing and corner bumping. Paper-covered boards, with coloured illustration, red lettering front and spine. 8vo. Covers are heavily toned, rubbed and scuffed, rounded and bumped at corners and spine ends, faded over spine. Three previous owner's inscriptions on front endpapers, one crossed out. Text block edges toned and spotted. Endpapers browned and spotted, otherwise generally neat and clean internally, barring a little softness to pages. A lovely vintage children's story with delightful illustrations, and now very hard to find.

But that is put to the test when she is forced to leave school and go to France as a governess.

Award plate attached to front endpaper (Daphne Brown, Balgowleh Methodist Sunday School) Janet is plump and unaccomplished except for violin playing, but she is cheerful and makes the best of things.
