Final draft of the film script, dated 29 August 1945, with Virginia Van Upp named as the author on the title page. The opening titles of the film credit the story to E. A. Ellington, the adaptation to Jo Eisinger, and the screenplay by Marion Parsonnet, while Van Upp is listed solely as the producer. The film, starring Rita Hayw…orth, is one of Hollywood's most sensual film noirs. There are passages of script which are not present in the film. The second meeting between Mundson and Johnny, for example, includes Mundson telling a tale about an Emperor of Rome who "put a tax on all the latrines in Rome" (page 14 of the present script), and this does not appear in the film. Similarly, the first scene that introduces Gilda is longer in the present script (including Gilda wondering "Maybe Mr. Farrel doesn't like to take orders from women", and Mundson's response, "We'll take your orders from now on - both Johnny and I. Won't we, Johnny?") (page 28 of the present script). The film was in production from 4 September to 10 December 1945 and premiered on 14 March 1946. The film has been selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". This copy includes a small number of annotations ("a rainy aft[ernoon]", "use for return", etc., together with some marks in red pencil). Mimeographed typescript, 157 leaves (280 x 204 mm), additional sheet numbered "38-A", pp. 43, 44, 104, 105, 113-15, 118, 120, 130, 135, 138-40 and 151 marked "Revised Page" (on yellow paper), pp. 121, 122, and "123, 124, 125, 126, 127" marked "2nd Rev Page" (on blue paper), pp. 98 and 118A marked "Added Page", printed on rectos only. Original green wrappers, front wrapper lettered in black with additional ink stamps ("File Copy", "Central Files. Vault Copy", etc.), two split pins. Housed in a custom green cloth folding box. Front wrapper, title page, and first page of script detached with some loss and tears, a few adhesive tape repairs: a very good copy.
