Painting and Chemotherapy, 1963, 1little booklet + 12 plate in one map, good condition with liagespotting of the map. This fascinating series of colour prints with accompanying commentary and analysis by leading psychiatrists was originally published by Sandoz Ltd in the early 1960s. They are loosely contained in a white folder, inside which, from the second series onwards, is the imprint of their product Melleril. We think that there were 25 editions of the series and some are more scarce than others. They were subsequently published by S Karger of Basel as 4 collections. Volume 1 (Series 1-6)(1966) Volume 2 (Series 7-12)(1967) Volume 3 (Series 13-18)(1973) and Volume 4 (Series 19-22 and 25)(1978). All these editions are out of print, although the latter one is comparatively widely available in the antiquarian book market for around $100US. The item described here is one of the original sets, having previously belonged to a psychiatrist working at the time. They each consist of a number of 31x23 cm card prints (see individual description for number) and a commentary of up to 8 pages. The author specified in the title is the author of the commentary. The artists of the individual works are not credited for their intellectual or physical property. The collections are remarkable in this day and age for the confident assertions by the commentators of the distinctions between 'art' and 'pathology'. It is difficult to assess from reading them what each author knows about either. Some of the narrative of the difficult personal and environmental circumstance of the artists is of enormous interest to the art and medicine historian. Text, 12 Tafeln Die Mappe ist leicht berieben, ansonsten ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. - (Auszug:) Frühere Autoren betrachteten ein Bildwerk, im Sinne der Gestalttheorie, als das Resultat eines privilegierten Experiments, in welches sich die Gesamtheit der Person projizierte. Eine Zeichnung oder eine Malerei galt nicht als Ausdruck eines partiellen Impulses, wohl aber als der eines voll und ganz an seiner Schöpfung beteiligten Individuums, mit allen seinen gesunden und morbiden Tendenzen. Gleichzeitig waren die Kliniker beeindruckt von der Umwandlung des Stils während der spontanen Entwicklung von Psychosen: alternierend dunkle und helle Perioden bei zirkulärer Psychose, Abwertung des graphischen Ausdrucks während der dementiellen und wahnhaften Entwicklung bei progressiver Paralyse, Spal- tung im Stil der Bildnereien im Verlauf einer Dementia praecox. Anhand einer einzigen Zeichnung interpretierte man die Gesamtpersönlichkeit ihres Autors in Gegenwart, Vergangenheit und Zukunft. Diese Art der Erfassung eines Bildwerks wurde tief- greifend verändert, einerseits durch die therapeutischen Fortschritte, andererseits durch psychoanalytische und phänomenologische Erkenntnisse. Stilwandlungen wur- den nun nicht nur bei spontanen Krankheitsevolutionen verfolgt, sondern auch während der Therapie. Die ersten Publikationen betrafen Veränderungen des Stils vor und nach Malariatherapie, während Elektroschock- und Sakelscher Insulinkuren, vor und nach psychochirur- gischen Eingriffen. Gewisse Techniken, wie z. B. "Finger painting", gestatteten das Aufsuchen und Festhalten von Anzeichen einer guten oder schlechten Prognose, das Bewerten von Fortschritten oder Verschlechterungen. Strukturwandlungen wurden ferner erfasst im Verlauf psychotherapeutischer Kuren. Man versuchte, das Bild- werk nicht nur in die Dynamik der Persönlichkeit, son- dern als Instrument in die Behandlungstechnik selbst einzugliedern. Immer mehr wurde es als Ausdruck einer Partialtendenz aufgefasst, die einer Analyse auf ihrem eigenen Interpretationsniveau wert ist, in der >- Situation und im Lichte der Arzt-Patient-Übertragungs- situation. Nur Serien von Bildern konnten ermöglichen, das Spiel der sukzessiven und kontradiktorischen Einzel- impulse in ihrer Beweglichkeit und Dynamik zu erfassen. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 250.

Sie erfolgte nach ästhetischen Kriterien, erst in zweiter Linie nach psychopathologischen; pro Patient wurde nur ein Werk aufgenommen. Die Aus- wahl ist somit weder für die Sammlung, noch für die Gesamtheit der plastischen Ausdrucksformen der Kranken repräsentativ. André Malraux beginnt seine "Metamorphose der Götter>> mit dem Satz: "Daß eine neue Ära beginnt und daß deren Malerei im Jahre 1860 geboren wurde, weiß heute jedermann". Diese neue Ära entspricht dem, was Bachelard den neuen wissenschaftlichen Geist nannte. Sie führte zu Entdeckungen in allen Gebieten. Ungezählte Bilder, aus der Zeit und der Weite aufsteigend, traten vor den Menschen. Die Gedanken über die Kunst wurden durch eine tief- greifende Änderung geprägt. Die Ästhetik, die ihre Bewertungen auf traditionelle Regeln und Prinzipien stützte, die sich aus dem althergebrachten Umgang mit einem begrenzten künstlerischen Erbe entwickelt hatten und von der Gesamtheit des okzidentalen Bewußtseins akzeptiert worden waren, mußte ihre Normen revidieren und ihre Werturteile anpassen. Parallel zu dieser Revolution etablierte die Kunst- geschichte ihre Domäne und erweiterte diese durch das Eindringen in weit zurückliegende Zeiten und Gegenden. Vergleichendes Denken erlaubte ihr die Beurteilung historischer Verkettungen, gegenseitiger Beeinflussung von verschiedenen ästhetischen Strömungen, ferner von Wechselwirkungen zwischen diesen und der Evolution der Zivilisationen. Nun steht ein Werk nicht mehr isoliert da; es wird in Beziehung gesetzt zu anderen Werken, zu seinem Schöpfer, zu seiner Zeit, zur Welt der Gedanken. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 250.

[. . .] La pathologie mentale, par suite de circonstances sur lesquelles il est inutile d'insister, s'est constituée dans une sorte d'isolement, que semblait légitimer le dualisme traditionnel du corps et de l'esprit. » [ L'identification, en 1905, du Treponema pallidum par Fritz Schaudinn et Erich Hoffmann a constitué une avancée considérable dans la compréhension de l'étiopathogénie de la syphilis (les patients souffrant de la paralysie générale étaient soignés dans les asiles d'aliénés). Pour la rédaction de L'Encéphale, cette découverte est une conquête de la neuropathologie qui appelle à « une fusion désirable » entre « les pathologies de l'esprit et celles du corps ». Et de poursuivre : «Aujourd'hui, l'enceinte étroite où s'était laissée momentanément isoler la pathologie mentale est rompue ». En 1906, L'Encéphale publie dans son premier volume des articles originaux : de Sérieux et Capgras (Les symptômes des délires d'interprétation), de Régis (Poésie et paralysie générale et La poésie dans les maladies mentales), de Mlle le Docteur Constance Pascal , souvent considérée comme la première femme psychiatre de France (Les ictus dans la démence précoce et Sur le délire des préjudices préséniles) et des commentaires d'ouvrages et de communications des congrès franc¸ ais et étrangers, des réunions de sociétés savantes qui traduisent la pensée des grands maîtres du temps : Alzheimer, Pick, Abraham, Janet, Dide, Ribot, mais aussi Emil Kraepelin. Keraval relate une opinion développée par le père de la folie maniaco-dépressive : les asiles d'aliénés seraient les lieux privilégiés pour l'observation naturaliste de l'évolution des pathologies mentales, alors que les cliniques (universitaires à l'allemande) seraient plus appropriées pour l'exploration des « causes physiques, somatiques et des manifestations concomitantes de la folie ». La publication de L'Encéphale se poursuit jusqu'en 1940. Interrompue par la seconde guerre mondiale, la publication de L'Encéphale reprend en 1946-1947 sous l'impulsion de Jean Lhermitte et de Jean Delay. Lhermitte signe l'éditorial du premier numéro d'après-guerre, dans lequel il rend un vibrant hommage à son maître Henri Claude, décédé le 29 novembre 1945, à l'âge de 76 ans, non sans avoir rappelé brièvement l'histoire de la revue " La revue L'Encéphale comptait, à partir du 20 décembre 1906, trois directeurs : Antheaume, F. Raymond et Henri Claude.
