Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. Circa 1850. In red cloth with gilt title on front cover and gilt illustration on spine (slight variation from 1st edition). Spine is a bit darkened but gilt is bright. All edges gilt. There is a penetration (ice pick?) near the top edge of the front cover reaching through the first 7 pages with a dimple present though the following 7 pages. The paste-down endpapers (front and back) have an 1.5" strip skinned off the leading edge (probably something taped or glues to paper and pulled off removing paper surface layer). Light wear to lower cover edges and corner. Still, a bright and attractive copy with 80 very nice illustrations along with descriptive text. An early printing of this work. ; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 236 pages.

William Henry Bartlett (1809-1854) apprenticed with architect and antiquarian John Britton before becoming known for his own drawings and watercolours. In 1838, Bartlett was in Upper and Lower Canada and the Maritimes, producing sketches for this volume by American writer Nathaniel Parker Willis. Published 1842, Canadian Scenery Illustrated portrays pioneer days in Canada, from native scenes to cities, from Aylmer, Upper Canada, to Halifax. There are also early views of Toronto, the Rideau Canal, the Ottawa River, the Eastern Townships, Montreal, Quebec, Fredericton, and many others.
