BELFORDS, CLARKE & CO. illustrated hardcover, sewn-bound in brick-red cloth, with black and gilt stamped decoration and lettering, is in G condition, having corners quite bumped and worn; wear to top and bottom spine, with spine lettering and decoration somewhat dulled with age; staining to front and back covers (see photos), along with rubbing/scuffing to surface; pages from first free endpaper to frontispiece are loose but all present; significant chipping to first free endpaper, and small tear at top; some small staining towards bottom of this loose section, which carries through to contents page; some evidence of prior water contact on top left of back cover, but not too bad; small, tasteful binding company sticker ("Bound by Donohue & Henneberry, Chicago") at bottom left of last fixed endpaper; all page edges have gilt treatment; due to its antiquarian age, book is very fragile. In very good minus dark green and black decorated, bevel edged boards with gilt titles to front and gilt title field to spine with green titles. The boards are flat and firm, slightly marked and with bumped spine ends and corners. The pale yellow end papers are a little marked; there is a prize plate on the front paste down. The text block is printed in two columns and extensively illustrated in black and white by Princess Louse, Henry Furniss, J. Watson Nicol, W. H. J. Boot, S. Reid, G. Morton and Others. The cut edges are in shiny gilt and the pages are tightly bound, straight and with light foxing to some pages. Not annotated. Very good minus condition. Rare edition. Heavy.
