The Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence is one of the most popular, reputable, and deeply studied of all chess openings. Modern Chess Openings calls it the "Cadillac" or "Rolls-Royce" of chess openings. The opening is named after the Polish-Argentine grandmaster Miguel Najdorf, although he was not the first strong player to play the variation. Many players have relied on the Najdorf (notably Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov, although Kasparov would often transpose into a Scheveningen). The Najdorf begins: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 Black's 5.a6 aims to deny the b5-square to White's knights and light-square bishop while maintaining flexible development. If Black plays 5.e5?! immediately, then after 6.Bb5+! Bd7 (or 6.Nbd7 7.Nf5) 7.Bxd7+ Nbxd7 (or Qxd7) 8.Nf5, the knight on f5 is difficult to dislodge without concessions. Games in the Najdorf frequently feature opposite-side castling, where White castles long and both sides launch simultaneous attacks on their opponents' kings. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, old sticker residue to front cover else very good.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 38 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers, First edition. The Réti Opening is a hypermodern chess opening whose "traditional" or "classic method" begins with the moves: 1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 White attacks Black's pawn from the flank, which may occasion 2.dxc4. White may couple this plan with a kingside fianchetto (g3 and Bg2) to create pressure on the light squares in the center. The opening is named after Czechoslovakian chess player Richard Réti (18891929). The opening is in the spirit of the hypermodernism movement that Réti championed, with the center being dominated from the wings rather than by direct occupation. If White fianchettoes both bishops, castles kingside, and refrains from occupying the center with pawns, the result may be described as the Réti System. Condition: Light edge wear else very good.

(Lusis: 2273) Originally published by Turnstile Press 1951. The 1951 World Chess Championship was between 39 year old defending champion Mikhail Botvinnik of the Soviet Union and 27 year old challenger David Bronstein who was also the defending champion. Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 38+[1 ad] pages unpaginated with diagrams and table. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. (Lusis: 1789) First edition. The small town of Bugojno in central Yugoslavia (now Bosnia) hosted five strong tournaments between 1978 and 1986. This tournament, however, was the first one. It was a Category 14 event that featured players of the old guard like Svetozar Gligoric, Borislav Ivkov and Robert E Byrne and pitted them against a younger generation that included Jan H Timman, Anthony J. Miles and Robert Huebner. The tournament ran from the 26th of February to the 16th of March and in the sixteen player field Anatoly Karpov and Boris Spassky emerged as the joint winners. For Spassky it was a victory to rank alongside wins such as the USSR Championship (1961), the USSR Zonal (1964) and the Second Piatigorsky Cup (1966). For Karpov it was an excellent dress rehearsal in his only other showing in 1978 before facing Korchnoi to defend the World Title in September. Timman came in a point behind the leaders. Ljubomir Ljubojevic and Mikhail Tal shared fourth with 8.5. Sixth was share as well with Vlastimil Hort and Bent Larsen with 8. Shared eight was Yuri S Balashov and Robert Huebner. Sole tenth was Anthony J. Miles with a score of 7. Borislav Ivkov and Lajos Portisch eleventh; while Milan Vukic and Robert Byrne shared thirteen. The last place finishers also shared Enver Bukic and Gligoric. Condition: Corners bumped, light edge wear, bookseller's sticker to title else a very good copy.
