Photograph mounted on board. #10 of 10. 1931 Walker Evans photograph, sometimes known as "Bed and Stove, Truro, Massachusetts," printed by Evans in 1941 for the exhibition "American Photographs at $10" at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. SIGNED twice on the mount by Evans. The exhibition was aimed at promoting photography as an art form to the general American public, and helping photographers to sell their work as such. Nine American photographers agreed to participate, submitting a single photograph each to the show. They included Berenice Abbott, Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, Helen Levitt, among the others. The Museum asked each of the nine to print 10 duplicates of their featured photograph, and these would be available for sale to the public for $10 each. The present print is number 10 of this series of 10 printed by Evans for this exhibition. The number "41.1902.10" is pencilled at bottom right corner on back side of the think mounting board (see description of lot 60, Sotheby's Photographs Sale, October 17, 2006 for more information and discussion of this numbering scheme).
