A historical work containing the diaries and notes of the English artist and explorer Thomas Baines (1820-1875). The books describe Baines' travels and expeditions to southern Africa (particularly present-day Zimbabwe and surrounding areas, then referred to as Matabeleland and Mashonaland) between 1869 and 1872. Baines was appointed as the leader of an expedition on behalf of the South African Gold Fields Exploration Company. The goal was to explore the gold fields (such as the Tati Gold Fields) and obtain mining rights. He describes his meetings and negotiations with local African leaders, including King Lobengula of the Ndebele, to obtain permission for prospecting. As a talented draftsman and nature lover, Baines recorded what he saw in detail. The diaries are full of observations regarding the geology of the area, the flora and fauna, and the customs of the local population. - Text in English.
