An account of the historic events of Napoleon's 1812 campaign to invade Russia, as seen through the eyes of Lt H.A. Vossler. The text is supported by editorial comments from the translator, Walter Wallich. The Württemberg cavalry officer Heinrich August Vossler was one of the few of Napoleon's Grande Armée returning from Russia in the winter of 1812. The description of the invasion of Russia and retreat forms the first part. In the second part Vossler narrates how he became a prisoner-of war being taken to Russia only to be released and re-patriated when Württemberg changed sides, abandoning France and joining the Russian coalition with Prussia and Austria. Vossler's account is worth reading for his descriptions of the march and the unimaginable conditions during the retreat in ice and snow with little food and lack of warm clothing during which the great majority of the soldiers perished. The book is well edited with a map and name-index. Ref YYY 3.

Slipcase has scrape to lower edge and other slight wear. Very good. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Not much is known of Johann von Grimmelshausen, but he is to the German novel what Daniel Defoe is to the English. This tale follows on from his first great work "Simplicius Simplicissimus" and observes the progress of Courage the gipsy-woman whom Simplicius marries in that first book. "Mother Courage" has a string of marriages left in her wake which form the basis of this picaresque novel: in each encounter and marriage, she displays her ubiquitous virtues of courage (of course), beauty, intelligence and enterprise; the tales may be scurrilous and risque, but Courage is open and forthright in giving the reader her views and motivations. Bertolt Brecht took the title of his play "Mother Courage and Her Children" from this work, along with the fiery nature of its protagonist, but that is where the appropriation and homage ends.
