Walther Schmied-Kowarzik (1885-1958), österreichischer Philosoph, studierte in Wien u.a. bei Jodl und nahm an Diltheys Privatissimum zur Grundlegung der Geisteswissenschaften teil. 1908 wurde er mit der Dissertation "Zeit und Raum. Eine psychologische und transzendentalphilosophische Untersuchung" promoviert; darauf aufbauend erschien 1910 seine Monographie "Raumanschauung und Zeitanschauung". Psychologisch-phänomenologische Untersuchung der Weise, in der Raum und Zeit im Bewusstsein gegeben sind. Schmied-Kowarzik unterscheidet formalen Raum, Anschauungsraum und physischen Raum und zeigt, wie räumliche und zeitliche Strukturen als Ordnungsgefüge in der Erfahrung konstituiert werden, ohne sich in bloße subjektive Empfindungen oder rein physikalische Größen aufzulösen. Die Schrift steht an der Schnittstelle von Psychologie und Transzendentalphilosophie (Kant-Rezeption, Dilthey-Tradition) und bereitet seine späteren bewusstseinsanalytischen Arbeiten ("Umriss einer analytischen Psychologie", 1912/28) vor. Weil er als Lehrer unzuverlässig war, verlor er 1788 die Professur und erhielt nie den Ruf ans Politische Institut. Als Historiographus Rei Publicae blieb ihm aber der Auftrag, eine bernische Rechtsgeschichte zu verfassen, sein Hauptwerk, in dem er die Vorstellung der uraristokratischen Grundverfassung Berns demontierte. Der erste Band dieser "Geschichte des bernerischen Stadtrechts" erschien 1794, während Walther aufgrund der Zensureingriffe die gesamte Auflage des zweiten Bands zerstören liess; der dritte Band wurde nie gedruckt, obwohl die Helvetische Republik dem Rationalisten, Aufklärer und Demokraten zu dessen Vollendung eine Pension ausgesetzt hatte.
