Hardcover. Condizione: New. Since in appearance in China in the third century. The Lotus Sutra has been regarded as one of the most illustrious scriptures in the Mahayana Buddhist canon. The object of intense veneration among generations of Buddhists in China, Korea, Japan and other parts of the world, it has had a profound impa…ct on the great works of Japanese and Chinese literature, attracting more commentary than any other Buddhist scripture. As Watson notes in the introduction to his remarkable translation. The Lotus Sutra is not sun much an integral works as a collection of religious texts, an anthology of sermons, stories and devotional manual, some speaking with particular force to persons of one type or in one set of circumstances, some to those of another type or in other circumstances. This is no doubt one reason why it has had such broad and lasting appeal over the ages and has permeated so deeply into the cultures that have been exposed to it.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good Minus. Very Good Minus. First edition, first printing. [POETRY]. Han-shan (fl.627-649). Translated by Burton Watson. "Cold Mountain: 100 Poems by the T'ang Poet Han-shan." New York: Grove Press, Inc. Printed in the USA, 1962. First edition thus, first printing. English language. Hardcover with gr…een cloth boards lettered silver on spine in laminated printed paper jacket. Collection of one hundred translated poems with introduction, translator's note, finding list, and black-and-white frontispiece. 8vo. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. 7 oz. 122 pp. Shelf-wear. Short tear to jacket at top left-hand corner. Off-setting to endpapers. Small Japanese tissue repair to verso of jacket. Strange printing quality to some leaves. Tear at bottom right-hand corner of a few leaves with no textual loss. Text clean. Very Good Minus in Very Good Minus jacket. No ISBN. ASIN: B000K6O8AW. OCLC: 1070703. "The poems cover a wide range of subjects: the conventional lament on the shortness of life, bitter complaints about poverty, avarice, and pride; accounts of the difficulty of official life under a bureaucratic system, attacks on the corrupt Buddhist clergy and the foolish attempts of the Taoists to achieve immortal life; and incomparable descriptions of the natural world in the mountain retreat. When Han-shan speaks of 'Cold Mountain,' he means himself, his home, and his state of mind; it is the conception of the 'hidden treasure' of the Buddha who is to be sought within one's self, not somewhere outside. The poems are as much an allegory of spiritual quest and attainment as a record of the life of a ragged hermit who became one of the immortals.".

Hardcover. Condizione: Like New. Condizione sovraccoperta: Like New. 216 pp. An excellent, spotlessly clean copy and dust jacket! Clean, fresh, sharp, tight, essentially flawless copy and dust jacket with very light shelf wear, crisp pages and clean text. Synopsis: The Tales of the Heike is one of the most influential works in J…apanese literature and culture, remaining even today a crucial source for fiction, drama, and popular media. Originally written in the mid-thirteenth century, it features a cast of vivid characters and chronicles the epic Genpei war, a civil conflict that marked the end of the power of the Heike and changed the course of Japanese history. The Tales of the Heike focuses on the lives of both the samurai warriors who fought for two powerful twelfth-century Japanese clans-the Heike (Taira) and the Genji (Minamoto)-and the women with whom they were intimately connected. The Tales of the Heike provides a dramatic window onto the emerging world of the medieval samurai and recounts in absorbing detail the chaos of the battlefield, the intrigue of the imperial court, and the gradual loss of a courtly tradition. The book is also highly religious and Buddhist in its orientation, taking up such issues as impermanence, karmic retribution, attachment, and renunciation, which dominated the Japanese imagination in the medieval period. In this new, abridged translation, Burton Watson offers a gripping rendering of the work's most memorable episodes. Particular to this translation are the introduction by Haruo Shirane. Chang Jae Lee (Design) (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst English edition, first printing of one of the most important compilations of homoerotic poetry written in the twentieth century. Hardcover issue. Original green faux leather with titles in gilt to the spine and upper board, in dustwrapper. Illustrated throughout in black and white. A near fine copy, the binding square and…firm, the spine tips and corners with some rubbing. The contents, with a small, light mark to the text block fore-edge and faint spotting to the endpapers, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed, nicked and creased original dustwrapper which has a few very short closed tears at the spine tips and two pieces of tape to the underside. Not price-clipped ($10 to the front flap). Issued simultaneously in hardcover and softcover, both of which are scarce. A groundbreaking collection by Matsuo Takahashi, the centrepiece of which, his long poem 'Ode', has been described by the publisher Winston Leyland "the great gay poem of the twentieth century". One of contemporary Japan's most significant poets, Takahashi's work, reminiscent of Walt Whitman's, is a celebration of the male body, treating homosexual desire as something sacred.
