Kann man gar von parodistischen Mitteln sp…rechen? - Im Rahmen der Studie werden auch Seiten aus Lichtensteins "Composition Books" (Comic-Ausschnittsammlungen) erstmals veröffentlicht und untersucht. - In den USA der 1950er Jahre waren Comics und abstrakter Expressionismus nicht miteinander vereinbar. Bis Roy Lichtenstein Liebes- und Kriegs-Comics sammelte und Ausschnitte von ihnen in kleine Schulhefte, seine Composition Books, klebte. Eva Wattolik zeigt, wie Lichtenstein seine Vorlagen verwendete und warum er dadurch zugleich die Werte von Trivial- und Hochkultur parodierte. Ein Blick auf die hier erstmals veröffentlichten Seiten dieser Hefte macht deutlich, was Lichtenstein an seinen Comic-Vorlagen interessierte. Er übernahm die Motive nicht einfach nur, sondern parodierte sie. Er verstieß gegen die damals etablierten Normen der Hochkultur - und befolgte sie zugleich. Dabei entstand etwas gänzlich Neues, das der Künstler in den weiteren Phasen seines Schaffens variierte und intensivierte. Um dies zeigen zu können, hat Eva Wattolik den literarischen Begriff der Parodie auf die bildende Kunst übertragen und damit eine wichtige Grundlage zum Verständnis von Gegenwartskunst geschaffen. - Grundlage der Untersuchungen sind Überlegungen zum Begriff der Parodie. Ausgehend von überwiegend literaturwissenschaftlichen Forschungsbeiträgen wird ein Modell zur Parodie erarbeitet, das rezeptionstheoretische Fragen fokussiert und auf die Besprechung von Bildern erweitert. Bereits bestehende Ansätze werden weiterentwickelt, indem gezeigt wird, dass eine Parodie nicht nur ein, sondern mindestens zwei Vorbilder haben muss. In den folgenden beiden Hauptteilen werden die frühen Comic-Gemälde mit Hilfe der vorher erarbeiteten Kriterien in einen Sinnzusammenhang gestellt. Im vierten Kapitel geht es zunächst darum, die grundlegenden Komponenten der parodistischen Dynamik festzulegen. Die Aufmerksamkeit liegt zum einen auf der materiellen und konzeptionellen Beschaffenheit der Kunstwerke, zum anderen auf deren Rezeptionsbedingungen Anfang der 1960er Jahre in den USA. Um die Reaktion auf Lichtensteins Gemälde in dieser Zeit verstehen zu können, ist das Wissen um die Wahrnehmung der Comic-Hefte sehr wichtig. Sie wird deshalb in einem eigenen Kapitel untersucht, wobei die von Lichtenstein gewählten Ausgaben besondere Berücksichtigung finden. Die daraus gewonnenen Ergebnisse werden dann Äußerungen von Kunstexperten gegenüber gestellt, die um 1963 erstmals in Kunstzeitschriften Stellung zu Lichtensteins Comic-Gemälden beziehen. Im fünften Kapitel steht das Werk selbst im Mittelpunkt: Exemplarisch werden die Gemälde "Drowning Girl" und "Whaam!" betrachtet und in Bezug zu deren Comic-Vorlagen betrachtet. Die Diskrepanz zwischen "Comic" und "Tafelbild" wird sich wie ein roter Faden durch die gesamte Arbeit ziehen.
