Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First China Edition, published by Kelly and Walsh in Shanghai. The book was originally published in London in 1900. Octavo, pp vii, 447. Bound in brown cloth covered hard boards and with the original dust jacket. Letters written by Bertram Lennox Simpson of his experiences in Peking… during the Siege of the Legations, using the pseudonym Bertram Weale. Simpson was a controversial figure among the British colonial service in China, and was eventually assassinated by Chinese political agents in Tientsin in 1930. Peter Fleming wrote, and not in a flattering manner, about Simpson in his 1959 book, "The Siege of Peking", and a previous owner has pasted a photocopy of half a page from Fleming's book to a blank prelim page here and also transcribed Fleming's criticism, in pencil, at the end of the foreword. The book is in Near Fine condition, with light browning to the endpapers. The jacket is chipped to the head of the spine and has some general wear, grades Good.

Weale was a prolific author on China who was present during the western powers' siege of Peking to retake it from th…e Boxers. He was deeply critical of the West's actions during the rebellion, and his Indiscreet letters has been identified by later scholars as not a collection of primary documents but an invention by Weale produced after the events to attack "supine British diplomatic leadership" (Bickers, Britain in China).

Kohl (1946-2025), former art teacher at the Hong Kong Internationa…l School, musician, artist, and historian. Fifth edition of ostensibly what claims to be an eye-witness account of the Boxer Rebellion while the author was in China during the siege of the legations, and later became Brigade interpreter for the British Expeditionary Force. The semi-notorious author was dismissed from the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, perhaps from the looting, and questionable behavior mentioned in his book (including taking over a Manchu home filled with women), Simpson (1877-1930) later worked as a Daily Telegraph correspondent in the Far East, but later was killed after taking control of customs in Tianjin for Yan Xishan. Eight stories set mostly in the Far East, exploring various cultural conflicts. "He gives us the atmosphere of the Far East, which he knows as few Anglo-Saxons know it, and yet he preserves his detachment of…spirit as Loti and Lafcadio Hearn do not. He pictures its strangeness, its insidious charm, and its dangers. The book should not be missed by those who are not afraid of a shudder or two, and who care for stories of artistic vitality." - New York Times, 3 July 1909. Aggiungi al carrello1st Edition. 404pp + 31 + [3] publisher's catalogues. original paper wrappers chipped with tape repairs on spine, corners bumped. Good copy. At first glance this novel may appear unremarkable, however it is of considerable interest in the 20th century history of Chinese-European relations as it includes (on page 26) what is beli…eved to be the earliest published reference to the infamous sign in Shanghai's Public Garden which purportedly stated "Dogs and Chinese not Admitted". The sign has now been conclusively shown not to have stated this, however references to the racist wording still appear to this day and the reporting of its existence has caused, and continues to cause, a great deal of ill feeling. Reginald Johnston, former tutor to Pu Yi the last emperor of China, wrote in a 1927 pamphlet issued by the Tianjin British Committee of Information that the anti-Chinese wording "it is a kind of slander which takes a lot of killing, and survives even the most authoritative denials". (Shanghai's Dogs and Chinese Not Admitted" Sign: Legend, History and Contemporary Symbol - Robert A. Bickers and Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom. The China Quarterly No 142. June 1995). Putnam Weale was the name under which Bertram Lenox Simpson (1877- 1930) wrote many books about China. Born in England Bertam Simpson followed his father into the Chinese Maritime Customs Service leaving the service in 1901. He wrote a great deal about China in the years that followed and became deeply involved in Chinese politics. He was murdered in 1930 and it seems quite likely that his murder was of a political nature, though neither motive nor killer was ever found.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good+. No Dust Jacket. China Edition. Spine sun, edgewear, endpapers foxed, light text tone, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover. ; First edition printed in China of this observer's detailing of the siege and sack of Peking in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion, written by a British national who was born in… China and spent his life in various government and media jobs. This copy has a fascinating association. The oldest owner's signature is "Hilda Macdonald" about whom I can find no information. The second signature is that of Howard E Kohn II, best known as the producer of the noir film "Hidden Fear". The final ownership marking is the stamp "Samuel Bronston Productions Ltd." Samuel Bronston produced the 1963 epic "55 Days at Peking" about the Boxer Rebellion siege of the foreign legations at Beijing. This "China Edition" of Indiscreet Letters may have been a reference work used in the movie's writing and filming. This first China edition of a first-person account providing insight into a key 20th-century political moment in China has a fascinating association by being used by the production company of the American movie on that subject. ; vii, 447 pages.
