Lateinisch wie Schlußschrift und Datierung war die Sprache dieses ältesten Augsburger Druckwerks, italienisch seine Schriftart. Der Inhalt, die Meditationen über das Leben Christi, ein im Mittelalter fälschlich dem heiligen Bonaventura zugeschriebener Text, gehörte jener Literaturgattung an, die das Verlagsprogramm der frühesten Drucker wesentlich bestimmt hat: der theologischen. Der Text hätte ebenso in Paris erscheinen können, wo er noch im 15. Jahrhundert nicht weniger als fünfzehn Auflagen erlebt hat. Das sind Selbstver-ständlichkeiten, aber man muß sie bedenken, wenn man den frühen Buchdruck überhaupt und wenn man im besonderen den Augsburger Buchdruck begreifen will. Er tritt in einem Gewande auf, das nicht Provinz, sondern Hauptstadt ist und das internationalen Schnitt verrät. Nicht in modischer Nachahmungssucht, sondern mit einer Selbstverständlichkeit, die sich guten Leistungen des zeitgenössischen Abendlandes verwandt und zugehörig weiß, ohne sie nur zu imitieren. - Wikipedia: Carl Wehmer (* 9. Januar 1903 in Hannover; 15. September 1978 in Dossenheim) war ein deutscher Bibliothekar, Hochschullehrer und von 1953 bis 1965 Leiter der Universitätsbibliothek Heidelberg.
