Condizione: ACEPTABLE. Original hand-coloured engraved map (68 x 55 cm) dissected into four panels and backed onto orange linen, folding down to 34 x 27.5 cm, calligraphic title, engraved label of the Paris map dealer and publisher Charles Simonneau with title 'Asie Mineure' inscribed in French to verso, with original hand-colour in outline. Some light toning and spotting. From Weiland's great "Allgemeiner Hand-Atlas" (general hand atlas) published by the Geographical Institute in Weimar. Published in 1829, the map offers a sophisticated and statistically-aware rendering of Ottoman Asia, with attention paid to provincial organisation, population distribution, and geographic connectivity within the empire. The map extends from Constantinople and Anatolia in the west through Syria and Mesopotamia to the Persian Gulf and Khuzistan in the east. The population size of each city is symbolised using a typology ranging from settlements under 5,000 to major cities of 100,000 or more, a notable feature for a map of this period. The text in the lower left provides further methodological transparency, clarifying how administrative centres are distinguished and how incomplete geographic knowledge, especially in the Syrian Desert and Arabian Peninsula, is rendered visually. The reference to tribal regions like the Aeneaze Beduinen and the relative blankness of central Arabia reflect both the limitations of European geographic information and the ambiguous nature of Ottoman sovereignty over interior lands. Weiland integrates classical, Ottoman, and modern place names, reflecting the scholarly cartographic practice of early 19th-century German mapmakers. Ancient regional names like Pontus, Cappadocia, and Assyrien coexist with Ottoman administrative terms such as Karaman, Kurdistan, and Bagdad. Coastal and riverine areas are treated with dense toponymic detail, particularly along the Tigris and Euphrates. A significant map for those interested in Ottoman reform, European perceptions of the Middle East, or the evolution of geographic knowledge in the post-Napoleonic era.…

Original hand-coloured engraved map (68 x 55 cm) dissected into four panels and backed onto orange linen, folding down to 34 x 27.5 cm, calligraphic title, engraved label of the Paris map dealer and publisher Charles Simonneau with title 'Arabie' inscribed in French to verso, with original hand-colour in outline. With 2 inset maps: 1) "Das Petraeische Arabien" [The Sinai Peninsular] by Rüppel and 2) "Charte von den Umgebungen von Derayeh nach Rousseau, und der, ihm von einem, demEmir Saud attachierten Scheik gemalden Angaben" [Riyadh] by Rousseau [Chart of the surrounds of Derayeh.and the details drawn for him by a Sheik attached to the Emir Saud]. Shows the pearl banks in the gulf, along with key caravan routes, tribal regions, fortified towns, ancient ruins, and cultivated gardens are marked with graduated symbols, described in a German-language legend beneath the title. Some light toning and spotting, generally a very good example. One of the earliest modern scientific mappings of the Arabian Peninsula with a remarkably accurate depiction of the Gulf Region for this period. In addition it is one earliest maps to name Kuwait (El Kuet ox Grane), Dubai (Debai) and Abu Dhabi (Abuthubbi). Centred on the Emirate of Nejd (Second Saudi State), coverage extends from the Sinai to Oman and from Syria to the Gulf of Aden. Weiland maps Arabian cities, towns, and roads with scientific precision, including the pilgrimage routes between Mecca and Medina. Cities outside modern-day Saudi Arabia are also labeled, including Baghdad, Basra, Beirut, Jerusalem, Gaza, Isfahan, and Persepolis. This map represents the most significant update on Arabian cartography in nearly 100 years - since the Carsten Niebuhr's Danish Arabia Expedition (1761 - 1767). The sources here are unclear, save for the work of Ehrenberg and Rüppell, evident in the insets. The whole offers a considerable update on both the political situation and the topography of the Peninsula - doing away with many of Niebuhr's errors and assumptions. The Inset Maps: Weiland offers two inset maps of the utmost significance. The first, appearing in the lower right, is a detail of Derayeh (Diriyah), the capital of the first Saudi dynasty from 1744 until 1818, and as this map went to press, the center of the Emirate of Nejd (1824 - 1891). In time, Diriyah would grow to become modern-day Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Weiland here reproduces the "Carte de Dreiye" drafted about 1808-1810 by the French diplomat-orientalist Joseph (Jean-Baptiste) Rousseau, now held in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Rousseau drew his plan while consul on the Gulf, using eyewitness testimony from a sheikh attached to Emir Saud ibn Abd al-Aziz Al Saud, and published a description of the region in 1809. His sketch is the earliest known European map to show both Diriyah (El Dereyeh) and its fortified suburb of Turaif (El Bedjereh) strung along Wadi Hanifah, with irrigated gardens, caravan tracks measured in travel hours, and the surrounding ridges that screened Najd from the coastal world. By incorporating this intelligence, Weiland alerts the reader that real political power on the Peninsula had shifted to the Wahhabi-Saudi heartland long before Ibrahim Pasha's army levelled Diriyah in 1818, and he preserves a cartographic record of a city whose original fabric was largely lost. The second inset represents a major cartographic update on the Sinai Peninsula - the first major cartographic revisions of this region since Niebuhr, based upon the mapping of German naturalists Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg and Eduard Rüppell. From Weiland's great "Allgemeiner Hand-Atlas" (general hand atlas) published by the Geographical Institute in Weimar.…
