Le surréalisme et singulièrement sa peinture, déroutent par l'étendue et la multiplicité des sujets traités. Les artistes les plus importants du mouvement - de Chirico, Max Ernst, Masson, Magritte, Dali, Tanguy, Miro, Giacometti, Brauner, Man Ray, Bellmer. - sont présentés dans l'exposition à travers des ensembles monographiques, auxquels répondent des cabinets de curiosité, évoquant la richesse de la visualisation surréaliste et la pluridisciplinarité du mouvement. Ils sont articulés autour de grands thèmes tels que 'Rêve', 'Nuit', 'Flâneur', 'Ville', 'Histoire naturelle', 'Erotisme', 'Blasphème'. André Breton, en 1924, donne une définition intéressante de ce mouvement : 'Surréalisme : automatisme psychique pur par lequel on se propose d'exprimer soit par écrit, soit de toute autre manière, le fonctionnement réel de la pensée. Dictée de la pensée en l'absence de tout contrôle exercé par la raison, en dehors de toute préoccupation esthétique ou morale'. L'influence du soulèvement dadaïste contre le monde de l'art et la société reste très sensible dans les oeuvres du début. Bientôt ' Les champs magnétiques' de Breton et Soupault vont introduire une pratique poétique qui saura transcender l'idée d'un art subjectif et individualiste, tandis que les premiers travaux de Max Ernst et d'André Masson fondent la légitimité de leur démarche artistique sur de nouvelles techniques : ' l'écriture automatique' et 'le collage'. Les surréalistes rejoignent alors rapidement Freud dans l'exploration de l'inconscient et entendent prendre une part active à l'organisation de la société. Ce projet se définit notamment à travers des revues telles que 'La Révolution surréaliste' mais aussi 'Documents' ou le 'Minotaure'. C'est pourquoi l'exposition présente aussi une large sélection de manuscrits et de livres illustrés qui soulignent la porosité qu'instaure le surréalisme entre peinture, poésie et littérature. Cette proximité fonde encore aujourd'hui le reproche fait à l'art surréaliste de n'être rien d'autre que de la littérature en peinture. Les motifs et les sujets des tableaux déroutent le spectateur qui se voit assailli de multiples questions sans réponses logiques. Si aujourd'hui ces oeuvres ont quelque peu perdu de leur étrangeté, c'est aussi parce qu'elles ont contribué à fonder notre mode de perception et d'argumentation. En effet les installations contemporaines, les vidéo-clips, les films, la publicité et autres jongleries interactives seraient impensables sans la contamination de sens et d'image pratiquée jadis par les surréalistes.
