To say the sense of sight is crucial to a practitioner of the visual arts may seem to be the most unrewarding of truisms, but by referring to sight in relation to her art, I am not thinking just of artefacts made to be seen but more broadly of her exploitation of the act of seeing as a process which not only involves the optical aspects of our perceptual apparatus but also integrally embodies a rich series of allusions, associations, meanings and memories. She brings this rich amalgam of illusion and allusion into being through specific sites or locations - the sites which have survived as traces from the historic past, such as the haunting remains of the overwhelmed city at Pompeii, and the sites which she invents as new arenas in which we can exercise our compulsion to make sense of form and colour. Alois Reigl, the great nineteenth-century German art historian, talked of our Kunstwollen - our will to form - our propensity in works of art to express our experience through ordered configurations and archetypal shapes.
