The scarce first edition of this work from author and sportswriter Trevor Wignall, a first world war lieutenant and chief sportswriter for the Daily Express.This is Wignall's history of boxing, with chapters also on 'the financial side', 'the medical side', boxing in various countries and short biographies of important fighters, including Kid Lewis, Jack Dempsey and Tommy Ryan. Illustrated with thirty-two photographic plates, many depicting scenes of important fights and important figures in boxing. Collated, complete.This work belonged to the library of Philip Brocklehurst, bearing his armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Brocklehurst is best known for being a member of the Nimrod Expedition in Antarctica of 19071909, led by Ernest Shackleton. A boxer himself, he represented Cambridge University at boxing in 1905, 1906 and 1907 as a lightweight against Oxford University, and obtained a half blue. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Shelf wear to spine head and tail. Small patch of fading to rear board. Contemporary owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Light foxing to first few pages.
