A charming and imaginative conceit, in which a diverse array of simple recipes are embedded within the structure of a children's story, set in the countryside during the Great War (the effect of which on the quantity and variety of available food is thereby a recurrent note); an Appendix at the rear set out the recipes in a more standard format, arranged alphabetically. The authors' Prefatory Note is forthright: 'We live in a world where few of us have been obliged (or allowed) to produce any part of the food we consume, and where few of us have been encouraged to look on the preparation of food as any part of a liberal equipment.' Elizabeth Robins was born and raised in the US, before rising to prominence as an actor on the English stage; she became a playwright, then a novelist, also harnessing her writing talent in service of her activism in the cause of women's suffrage - she was first president of the Women Writers' Suffrage League. She published with the Hogarth Press, and was a friend of the Woolfs. Her co-author here was a great-granddaughter of William Wilberforce; in 1909, she met Robins, 'who became the most important person in her life' (ODNB) - neglected by her own parents, she took Robins as a surrogate, and relied on her friend's support as well as her own determination, to become a doctor with her own general medical practice in Brighton. It was in her capacity as a physician, as well as a personal friend, that Leonard Woolf consulted Wilberforce regarding his wife's declining mental state - with her exhortation to rest given to Virginia the day before her suicide in 1941.
