His first pictures still extant are in an album marked 'album 2' and dated 1888. from that time on, he captured with his camera the life of his times. The photographic albums date from 1888 through the first two decades of the twentieth century.He was not a photographer by profession, he was a railway superintendent and bank president.enjoyed a special closeness to his daughters as their progress from infancy to childhood is revealed through a series of photographs which are vibrant with spontaneity and charm. Methods of travel held a fascination for him as he photographed the two great movers of the century, the locomotive and the steamship. Less imposing modes of transportation including bicycles, goatcarts, stagecoaches, buses, wagons, sailboats, and rolling chairs are also recorded, from a tender portrait of his eldest daughter cradling the family pet we are transported to the hustle and bustle of the newly constructed Brooklyn Bridge. An insightful moment is captured by Fry's lens as J. P. First two volumes only, as acquired, both have the signature of Edith Lewis on the front flyleaves, who was a magazine editor and domestic partner of writer Willa Cather for 40 years, then as her executor. Red cloth volumes with just light shelf wear, clean, bright…gilt stamping to spines, tightly bound, unmarked. Dust jackets are worn, especially volume 1. Bought from The Holiday Bookshop of NYC with seller's tag in back of each book. The series was published in 4 volumes, but I have just the two. Curiously they appear to have been bought separately, with Lewis' signature in volume 1 dated January 1957 and volume 2 dated December 1956.
