Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "This beautifully illustrated monograph explores the career of one of the most original and influential sculptors now working in the modernist tradition. His early work, as part of London's 'New Generation,' used unexpected materials in sculptures that married form and color in unprecedented ways. They are distinguished by their inventive polychrome and sleek industrial materials (fiberglass, plexiglass, glass, and aluminum tubing along with wood) as well as by their repetitive, curvilinear profiles and bold thrusts into space. Once in the U.S., Witkin continued to explore abstract volume and color in steel. His generously scaled constructions, equally notable for their structural audacity and emotional range, established him as a legitimate heir to the tradition of David Smith. In the early 1980s Witkin shifted to working in bronze, inventing a method of constructing with directly poured elements. This most recent work allows him to combine the sensuality of once-molten metal, the expressiveness of organic forms, the richness of bronze patina, and the immediacy of constructed sculpture. These bronze works, as well as a number of related works in stone, are the most lyrical of the artist's career, yet they continue the themes of cantilevering, balancing, tense piling, defiance of gravity, and containment that have been among his preoccupations since the beginning. Author Karen Wilkin relates the story of the artist's career to date, discussing the evolution of his work in the context of the modernist tradition as well as the work of Witkin's contemporaries." - Publisher. [52] pp.; 21 x 24 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unkown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed Two volume exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with two-part show held March 14 ? May 18, 2014 and May 25 ? August 3. "Other Primary Structures revisited the premise of and built upon the Museum''s seminal 1966 exhibition Primary Structures: Younger American and British Sculptors, the first American museum exhibition to survey the style now known as Minimalism. Primary Structures introduced the public to such artists as Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Walter De Maria, Robert Morris, and others--figures unknown at the time but soon to become synonymous with a radically new approach to sculpture. Nearly 50 years later, Other Primary Structures revisits this formative moment in art history while also reexamining the period from today''s far more global perspective. "Presented in two parts, the first part of the exhibition titled Others 1, examined work created between 1960 and 1967, while Others 2, on view from May 25 ? August 3, presented work created between 1967 and 1970, some of which was directly influenced by the 1966 Primary Structures exhibition at the Jewish Museum." -- publisher''s statement. This publication includes a faithful reprint of the original 1966 catalogue published in conjunction with show held April 27 - June 12, 1966. Essay by exhibition''s curator Kynaston McShine.
