Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Very Good. [Interesting provenance, previously owned by Senator John McCain.] Softcover. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Front wrap chipped. Bookplate of McCain on half title page. Clean, unmarked pages. "John Sidney McCain (1936-2018) was a U.S. senator who was the Republican Party's nominee for president in 2008 but was defeated by Barack Obama. McCain represented Arizona in the U.S. House of Representatives (1983-87) before being elected to the U.S. Senate (1987-2018). Although a self-described conservative 'foot soldier in the Reagan revolution,' McCain clashed with his party's right wing on a wide range of issues. Long a favorite of reporters, who admired what they saw as his directness, he garnered a reputation as a political maverick. In 1967, during the Vietnam War, McCain was nearly killed in a severe accidental fire aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, then on active duty in the Gulf of Tonkin. Later that year McCain's plane was shot down over Hanoi, and, badly injured, he was captured by the North Vietnamese. In captivity he endured torture and years of solitary confinement. When his father was named commander of all U.S. forces in the Pacific in 1968, the North Vietnamese, as a propaganda ploy, offered early release to the younger McCain, but he refused unless every American captured before him was also freed. Finally released in 1973, he received a hero's welcome home as well as numerous service awards, including the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit." - Britannica.…

B.C.) -- 1. FLAMBOYANT VESSEL: Excavated in Niigata Prefecture. Middle Jomon Period. Fired clay. Height 32 cm. Nagaoka Municipal Science Museum, Niigata. the Jomon Period people lived chiefly on fishing, hunting and gathering. In this decora-tive vessel, we see their vigour and their passion for form. In -- 2. FIGURINE: Excavated in Yamanashi Prefecture. Middle Jomon Period. Fired clay, Jomon type pottery. Height 25.5 cm. Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo. kind of figurine must have had some magical function. It has a delightful naïveté and vivid emotion. This -- YAYOI PERIOD (3rd cent. ..-3rd cent. A.D.) -- 3. JAR: Excavated in Tokyo. Late Yayoi Period. Fired clay. Height 21.5 cm. Tokyo Uni-versity. People of the Yayoi Period who formed settled farming communities loved simpler forms than those of the Jomon Period. This simplicity became one of the keynotes throughout the history of Japanese art. -- 4. DOTAKU or BRONZE BELL: Detail. From Kagawa Prefecture. Middle or Late Yayoi Period. Bronze. Height 43 cm. Ohashi collection, Tokyo. (Preserved by Tokyo National Museum.) It is said that these flat bell-shaped objects were used in rituals. Here on the cast bronze-work we see a dancing scene, a hunting scene, figures threshing rice and an elevated house, all having importance in the life of the people of that age. -- TUMULUS PERIOD (4th cent. early 6th cent.) -- 5. WOMAN'S HEAD OF HANIWA: From Nara Prefecture. Late Tumulus Period, 5th-6th cent. Fired clay. Height of remaining part, 16.3 cm. Tokyo. Haniwa means figurines and models of various objects, made of terra-Tokyo National Museum, cotta, which were placed around and on the side of the huge tombs of ruling class people in the Tumulus Period. Notice the mild, peaceful countenance of the figurine. -- 6. WALL PAINTING OF TOMB CHAMBER, TAKEHARA TUMULUS: Colour on rock. Late Tumulus Period, 6th cent. Fukuoka. Here we see the most primitive type of a mythological world, not so sophisticated but fantastic and serious. The boat, horse and dragon-like creature may have been vehicles for the dead to go to heaven, on land, on water and in air. -- 7. MAGATAMA, COMMA-SHAPED ORNAMENT OF JADE AND OTHER STONES : Tumulus Period. Length of the largest one, 5 cm. Maeda Collection, Kanagawa. Jade beads and tubular jade were found in China and Korea as well as in Japan. But comma-shaped ornaments in jade and other materials were made only in Japan. This and other shapes of jade were used as personal ornaments by upper class people of the age. -- 8. SANCTURY OF ISE GRAND SHRINE: The last regular replacement, 1953. Plan 11.2 X5.46 m. Mie. It is believed that the building of certain old shrines con-serve the form of residence of the ruling class of primitive-age Japan. They must have built the best they could for their gods. -- ASUKA PERIOD (Late 6th cent.-7th cent.) -- Nara. 9. MAIN HALL (GOLDEN HALL) AND FIVE-STORIED PAGODA OF HORYUJI: 7th cent. Main Hall: Plan 18.4×15.2 m.; Pagoda: Plan 10.85 m. sq.; Height 32.45 m. pound, was broken, and the Golden Hall and Pagoda were arranged on opposite sides Here the tradition of having a symmetrical plan for the temple com-of the axis connecting the center of the gate and the Lecture Hall. But the cubic space occupied by each is about the same, resulting in a well-balanced feeling. -- 86.5 cm. H?ry?ji, Nara. 10. SHAKA TRIAD: By Tori. Dated 623. Bronze. Height of Shaka, the central figure, dhism is here shown with the two side-figures. In this triad, the emphasis is put on the Shaka (in Skr. Sakyamuni), the founder of Bud. frontal view, a characteristic of this age. The sharp but rigid treatment of the drapery and the elongated faces are due to the influence of Chinese sculpture of the middle 6th century. -- 11. GUZE KANNON: 7th cent. Wood covered with lacquer and gold leaf. Height 197 cm. Yumedono, H?ry?ji, Nara. (in Skr. Avalokite?vara) sometimes interpreted as the Goddess of Mercy in the West. This merciful looking image is Kannon Bosatsu This particular one has the prefix "Guze", which means saving the world. -- 12. KUDARA KANNON: 7th cent. Wood, painted. Height 209.2 cm. -- Kudara was one of the states in Korea of the day. It was given this name in old time probably because it was thought to be Korean in style. The slender, brightly H?ry?ji, Nara. coloured figure shows a kind of feminine beauty, though theoretically Kannon does not belong to either sex. -- 13. BODHISATTVA: 7th cent. Wood. Height 176.5 cm. Horinji, Nara. Though the material is wood, it is evident that the artist copied the style of a bronze image, because the pleats of the drapery and the edges of the lotus petals at the pedestal are so sharply carved. -- This 14. BODHISATTVA: 7th cent. Wood. Height 132 cm. Ch?g?ji, Nara. Bosatsu, or Bodhisattva is a seated figure in meditating posture. Buddhism regards per-sonal meditation of equal importance with the teaching of Buddha. This can also be regarded as a symbol of young Japan searching for the right path -- 15. MIROKU BOSATSU: Dated either 606 or 666. Probably the latter is the date. Gilt bronze. Height 41.5 cm. Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo. It is another meditating figure. The arms are disproportionately long. Some parts of the body are too long and some parts too short. But there is a philosophical or spiritual beauty com-parable to the brilliancy of the gilt bronze material used for this figure. -- 16. PRINCE MAKASATTA GIVING HIMSELF TO A TIGRESS AND SEVEN CUBS: Detail. A panel of a household shrine called Tamamushi Shrine. 7th cent. colour on wood. Height: The shrine, 223 cm. Lacquer-The panel, 65×49.5 cm. H?ry?ji, Nara. One of the Jataka stories is here depicted. Prince Makasatta, a past incarna-tion of Sakyamuni (Buddha) threw himself to the hungry tigress and her cubs. Three different moment.…
