"The Gutai Art Association was founded by Yoshihara Jiro in 1954 in the cosmopolite town of Ashiya, near Osaka. The group spanned two generations, totaling 59 artists and is one of the most radical movements in postwar Japanese art history. Published in conjunction with the first United States museum retrospective ever devoted to Gutai, exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, "Gutai: Splendid Playground" surveys the influential Japanese collective and artistic movement. This exhibition catalogue aims to demonstrate the range of bold and innovative creativity present in the avant-garde movement, to examine the aesthetic strategies in the cultural, social and political context of postwar Japan and the West, and to further establish Gutai in an expanded, transnational history and critical discourse of modern art" (the publisher). A well-produced catalogue for two exhibitions: 'Shozo Shimamoto' held between March 14th to May 5th 2012, and 'Shimamoto - The Gutai Works' held between September 3rd to October 3rd 2015, both at Axel Vervoordt Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium. Includes texts by the artist and Jiro Yoshihara, Axel Vervoordt, etc. Shozo Shimamoto was a founding member of the Gutai movement. He perforated canvases or smashed glass bottles on them, which were filled with paint. He shot paint with cannons on large sheets of vinyl, made sculptures from razors, scratched films, and made violent and destructive installations with light and music for the theatre stage. Shimamoto's so-called "performances of destruction" were mostly executed in the public space. Despite the distinct resemblance between Gutai projects and avant-garde artists such as Lucio Fontana, Gustav Metzger, Yves Klein and Antoni Tapies, Shimamoto's influence on the Western avant-garde has never fully been acknowledged. One corner very slightly bumped, and a suggestion of moisture crinkling to upper edges of a few rear pages. Internally tight.
