Condannato e arrestato come "monaco vagante" da papa Paolo IV, morì rinchiuso a Castel S. Angelo. Una lapide commemorativa si trova nell'ingresso della civica biblioteca Angelo Mai. Cfr. ZanchiÂ(Bergamo 1501 ca.-Roma 1558), umanista, si formo' alla scuola di lettere latine di Giovita Rapicio da Chiari ed entro' nella Congregazione dei Canonici Regolari Lateranensi, vesti'Âl'abito monastico nel convento di Santo Spirito in Bergamo, dove creo' insieme ai due fratelliÂun ammirato centro di cultura e religiosita'. Fu in seguito arrestato come 'monaco vagante' per disubbidienza al decreto emanato da papa Paolo IV (1558) che imponeva ai monaci di tornare ai loro monasteri, venne rinchuso in Castel Sant'Angelo, dove mori'. Zanchi (15011558) compiled this dictionary of Latin epithets at the age of seventeen, first published in 1542 as Basilii Zanchi bergomatis epithetorum commentarii. His own Latin verse was much admired by LeoX; he entered the Canons Regular of the Lateran in 1524 and subsequently wandered throughout Italy until he was arrested in 1558 for violation of PaulIV's edict preventing monks from straying from their monasteries; he died in prison in the same year. A second edition appeared in 1601 in Leuven under the present title, and another at Antwerp, printed by Bellère in 1612, although no precedence is established (the title-pages of both the Antwerp and Mons editions describe the work as 'nunc secondo trans Alpes editum'). Luca Rivius, who later published another edition of the work in 1622, had been employed at the printing house of Jean Bellère in Antwerp and was active as a printer in Mons from 1603 to 1618. He is a relative perhaps a brother of Gerard Rivius, printer of the first edition at Leuven (Rousselle, p.199). OCLC finds copies of this edition at the BnF and Koln only; we find one other, at the municipal library at Mons. USTC 1120563; Rousselle, Bibliographie montoise 149; not in Brunet or STCV (recording the 1612 Antwerp edition only).
