In seinem ersten veröffentlichten Roman wählte der sowjetische Philosoph Alexander Zinowjew, um die sowjetische Gesellschaft in Gähnende Höhen zu satirisieren und lächerlich zu machen, dargestellt als die Stadt/Nation Ibansk. Jeder Ibanskianer trägt den Namen Iban Ibanovich Ibanov und hat daher einen Spitznamen wie Schwätzer, Verleumder, Boss, Schwein, Wahrheitsverkünder, Maler, Soziologe und viele andere. Die bewunderten Figuren sind Bawler und Wahrheitsverkünder, der offensichtlich Alexander Solschenizyn ist, der Boss ist Stalin, das Schwein ist Chruschtschow. Geringere Charaktere sind schwerer zu entschlüsseln. Ibansk lässt sich grob als 'Schraubendorf für alle Ivans' übersetzen. Ihre politische Religion wird Ism genannt (kurz für Soc-ism), und niemand glaubt wirklich daran. Als es geschrieben wurde, war das Buch im Wesentlichen eine Superlativbeschreibung der Sowjetunion.
