The work edited here (in linked excerpts), an anonymous composition in 1611 rhymed hexameters, is an example of the exegetical type of biblical versification that became popular from the eleventh century onwards. T…he poem, likely composed in the middle to late eleventh century, forms a lengthy commentary on the genealogy of Jesus as it is recorded in the first seventeen verses of the gospel of Matthew, but the poet ranges widely over the entire Bible for his material, frequently drawing on the Old Testament (especially the books of Genesis and Kings) for details about the characters dealt with. Some of the characters in the poem are not even mentioned in Matthew, e.g. the first three sons of the patriarch Jacob; and the poet tackles two of the problems presented by Matthew's genealogy: that without counting Jeconiah twice, the division of the forty-two generations of Jesus' ancestry into three sets of fourteen is incomplete, and that the father of Joseph (the husband of Mary) is called Jacob in Matthew but Heli in Luke. This poem's solution to the latter problem is particularly convoluted, and not based on any of the poet's known or presumed sources. In the manuscript edited here, Heidelberg, Universitatsbibliothek, MS. Salem IX 15, dating to the late eleventh or early twelfth century, the poem is accompanied by extensive interlinear and marginal glosses, which provide lexical, grammatical, and syntactical aids as well as summaries, interpretations, and comments on the text, thus giving much essential assistance to readers of verses that are frequently very difficult to construe. The Liber generationis was edited in full by Martin Rodel in 1999; the present edition is of extracts only (totalling 860 verses), preserving as well as possible the internal logic of the text, but reducing its length in order to make the work more useful for teaching purposes and more accessible to a student audience. The 860 verses are accompanied by all their glosses, printed on facing pages; extensive footnotes to both the poem and the glosses supply references to biblical and other sources, clarifications of the biblical narrative presented by the poet (especially when the medieval glosses do not provide sufficient help), and translation aids. The introduction to the edition discusses the content and organization of the poem, its rhyme and meter, the complexity and difficulty of its language and the unusual features of its style, the nature of the codex, and the glosses; the section on glosses includes examples of how the poem and glosses must be read together to form a complete understanding of the text. A select bibliography, textual notes, and three appendices - a list of all the biblical names mentioned in the text, a genealogical table, and a list of the interpretations given to the biblical names in the text - complete the volume. This book will be of interest to students and teachers of Medieval Latin, literary and linguistic scholars, all those interested in medieval glossed texts and the use of such texts as teaching tools, and scholars of biblical versification and exegesis in the Middle Ages. 0 g.

Serfdom was distinct from slavery in that serfs were recognized as something more than chattels. They could contract legitimate marriages, hold personal property and…they could not be moved around at will. The fact that serfs were in many regions a minority of the peasant population, and the increasing importance given to social and economic circumstances over legal definitions led historians to move away from examining servile condition and its implications during much of the late twentieth century. Attention has instead focused on the seigneurial regime and village society with little regard for the influence of status. In the Middle Ages and indeed in all pre-industrial societies, the vast majority of the population tilled the land. We are still not in a good position to evaluate how noble and ecclesiastical landlords received revenues from lands they were only indirectly engaged in farming, thus there are important gaps in our knowledge of the basic factors that governed medieval society. What kind of agricultural system provided the impetus for economic growth that so dramatically increased the number of cities and volume of trade There is no modern, synthetic book on medieval serfdom that compares regions or draws general conclusions about it. This work attempts such a synthesis and also shows avenues of future research, but most importantly it is intended to reorient attention to the importance of serfdom in the structure of medieval society.

Questi nuovi orizzonti del filosofare costituiscono, secondo modalita gnoseologiche e ontologiche variabili da un filosofo all'altro, il sostrato delle noetiche e delle metafisiche della tradizione aristotelica medievale e rinascimentale. Per quanto concerne la filosofia moderna, gli studi qui condotti mostrano come il nesso anima-corpo non si costituisca attraverso la mediazione della sensibilita interna o esterna intesa nei modi tradizionali delle correnti filosofiche tardo-antiche e medievali, ma si configuri piuttosto come problema dell'identita della persona psico-fisica e della sua stessa individualita. Der Reiz dieser Psalmenerklarung besteht darin, dass es sich nur um kurze Notizen handelt. Dadurch verlangt sie vom Leser m…ehr eigenes Nachdenken als die ausfuhrlicheren Kommentare. Der Leser wird nicht am Text der Psalmen entlang gefuhrt, sondern jeweils nur an eine bestimmte Stelle gesetzt und muss sich mit Hilfe der kurzen Notiz den Kontext erschliessen. Hieronymus vergleicht sein Vorgehen mit dem der Kartographen, die mit wenigen Strichen und Zeichen die Lage von Landern und Stadten auf einer kleinen Tafel darstellen und damit einen Uberblick uber ausgedehnte Gebiete geben. Ebenso sollen seine kurzen Anmerkungen einen Uberblick geben uber den gesamten Psalter. Die Commentarioli bieten jedoch nicht nur Erklarungen zum Verstandnis der Psalmtexte, sondern auch Hinweise auf das theologische Denken und die Auseinandersetzung mit den Haretikern dieser Zeit. Im 5. bis 8. Jahrhundert wurden die Commentarioli mit Psalmerklarungen anderer Herkunft zu einem neuen Werk verarbeitet. Ihre ursprungliche Fassung wurde erst Ende des 19. Ambrosius ubertragt in dieser Schrift, die auf der sorgfaltigen Lekture von Texten des Athanasius, aber auch des Basilius beruht, die kappadozische Form des Neunizanismus in die lateinische Terminologie. Zudem wird die homoiische Theologie, die sich stark an Bibeltexten orientiert, mit ausfuhrlichen Bibelargumentationen widerlegt. Ambrosius wurde lange Zeit unterschatzt und vornehmlich als ein rezipierender und kaum schopferischer Kirchenpolitiker des vierten Jahrhunderts gesehen. Doch wird dieses negative Bild heute in vielen Punkten revidiert. L'apparition des Mongols, surgissant dans les premieres decennies du XIIIe siecle des profondeurs de l'Asie, a change le destin de l'Europe orientale. Elle a en meme temps ouvert aux Europeens de l'Ouest les routes de l'Asie. Depuis la fin de l'epoque romaine, des peuples venu…s des steppes s'etaient succedes, penetrant a plusieurs reprises, plus ou moins profondement dans l'espace europeen ou plusieurs d'entre eux s'etaient implantes. Les Occidentaux ne s'etaient guere preoccupes de s'informer das causes de ces migrations et de leur llieu d'origine. La premiere campagne mongole en 1222 n'avait pas inquiete l'Occident. Il en fut autrement de la seconde, pendant laquelle les "Tartares" arriverent en Hongrie en 1237 et poursuivirent leur avance en direction de l'Ouest; mais cette menace s'estompa vers 1260. Il fallut pour que les choses changent, que le danger se rapproche des terres franques du royaume latin d'Orient. C'est lorsque les Mongols menacent Antioche, en 1243, que l'on commence a s'emouvoir. Et c'est alors qu'apparaissent les ambassades, qui seront en meme temps des voyages de decouverte. Ce sont ces relations de voyage, les unes developpees, les autres tres breves, qui sont presentees dans ce recueil. On y lira les temoignages suivants: l'emergence de l'image du Pretre Jean chez Otton de Freising, la Relation de David (en deux versions), les renseignements donnes a Mathieu Paris par Andre de Longjumeau, l'Histoire des Tartares de Simon de Saint-Quentin, des lettres du gouverneur de Perse Eljigidei ou celle de Hulegu a Saint Louis, ou celle du connetable d'Armenie a des cousins francs. Tous ces documents anterieurs aux voyages de Marco Polo nous offrent un apercu inedit en traduction francaise de la facon dont les occidentaux ont essaye de s'informer sur la civilisation et le monde mongols dans la deuxieme moitie du XIIIe siecle. Diese marianische Interpretation des Hohenliedes, die die "Menschwerdung des Herrn" in den Mittelpunkt ruckt, wirkte uber das Mittelalter hinaus weit in die Zukunft hinein. Damit wird nach seinem Fruhwerk "De divinis officiis", das bereits in den Fontes Christiani (Bd. 33/1-4) erschienen ist, das zweite Werk Ruperts von Deutz erstmals ins Deutsche ubersetzt.
