The suggestions for materials design in this book will help teachers to meet the needs of advanced learners, to move from correct sentences to communicatively effective texts, to de-fossilize ingrained erroneous language, to apply theoretical understandings of communicative processes to language use and to become aware of their own language needs and the learning options open to them. This is a book that is not only firmly grounded in 'state-of-the-art' linguistic theory in particular, the findings of cognitive linguistics but it is, above all, the result of decades of collaborative English language teaching experience at tertiary level. All the design ideas have been put into practice in the classroom and have successfully passed the test of use. ISBN 9783631582886 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 205.

What to do as a mediator when conflicts between groups or states escalated to become a tangible conflict of collective identities? This question was the focus of the workshop conference «Building Cultures of Peace» 2009 at the University of Hamburg. Three well-known experts on peace and conflict work Jay Rothman and Vamik Volkan from the U.S. and Sami Adwan of Palestine gave a look into the theory and practice of their work in intensive workshops. 100 participants used the event to expand their knowledge and understanding of the development and management of ethno-political conflicts. This two-part book documents the gains of the event: the lectures of the experts as well as numerous essays by the participants in English and German. The two parts contain different topics. It is therefore worthwhile to browse through both of them. ISBN 9783631605813 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 295.

After an overview about the Socio-political Cinema in Latin America, the subsequent articles spotlight socio-historical and cinematic topics such as Film and History, Guerilla Filmmaking and Indigenous Cinema. The following essays aim at presenting paradigmatically selected nations with their rich and turbulent histories and at providing the opportunity for more detailed discussion of some of the fascinating Latin American film-makers. Finally, various reviews of mainly contemporary films focusing on socio-critical aspects complete this volume. - REVIEWS Tomas Gutierrez Alea: Memorias del subdesarrollo, 1968 [Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach] -- Jorge Sanjinés: Yawar Mallku (La sangre del condor), 1969 [Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach] -- Miguel Littin: EI chacal de Nahueltoro, 1969 [Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach] -- Miguel Littin: Actas de Marusia, 1975 [Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach] -- Miguel Littin: Alsino y el condor, 1983 [Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach] -- Luis Pucnzo: La historia oficial, 1985 [Javier Guliérrez-Rexach] -- Ricardo Larraín: La frontera, 1991 [Jenny Haase] -- Florian Gallenberger: Quiero ser, 1999 [Esther Marie Stienen] -- Marco Bechis: Garage Olimpo, 1999 [Sven Pötting] -- Alejandro González Iñárritu: Amores perros, 2000 [Claudio Cifuentes-Aldunate] -- José Luis Marqués: Flickland, 2000 [Teresa Delgado] -- Israel Adrián Caetano: Bolivia, 2001 [Karen Saban] -- Fernando Meirelles / Katia Lund: Cidade de deus, 2002 [Anna Paula Foltanska] -- Fabrizio Aguilar: Paloma de papel, 2003 [Sabine Mandler] -- Luis Mandoki: Voces inocentes, 2004 [Nicole Kretzsclimer] -- Joshua Marston: Maria, llena eres de gracia, 2004 [Laura Zamora Gómez] -- Jonathan Jakubowicz: Secuestro Express, 2005 [Henning Müller] -- Emilio Maillé: Rosario Tijeras, 2005 [Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach] -- Alexis Dos Santos: Glue, 2006 [Lena Butz] -- Francisco J. Neuwertig - as new! Good teaching at universities has considerably gained importance within the last years. This is especially relevant with regard to the high drop-out rates, above all in engineering sciences. At the moment, however, there is a lack of empirically valid instruments for the assessment of the impact of good teaching on the students' learning results. This volume presents current conceptual and empirical works with a focus on methodology and their didactical application in university teaching. And moreover to deal with humanitarian issues such as peace, integration, immigration and peacefully living together as well as providing long-term perspectives for changes and promotion of peaceful change in society. The study breaks down the barriers and leads the readers to go beyond the borders. The components of the project are all focused on the sociological issues like immigration, isolation and integration. The method, which has been used, is a new kind of way to investigate sociological phenomena and interpret them in a manner which provides the background of challenges in a concrete and uncomplicated way with emotion and reality. The theoretic motto is: «Science for all». The project is particularly applicable for anthropologists, ethnologists, sociologists and philologists. - Contents: Parti -- The Dreams and Nightmares of a Refugee Teacher in Europe -- Chapter 1 The Search for Hope -- Chapter 2 Buon Giomo Italia -- Chapter 3 Dreams and Fears -- Chapter 4 Welcome to Vienna Comrade -- Chapter 5 Vienna Round -- Chapter 6 Request for Asylum -- Chapter 7 Going for a Walk in the Rain -- Chapter 8 Home, Sweet Home -- Chapter 9 Vienna is calm and quiet like the Danube -- Dear Neighbor -- Chapter 10 Seeking Shelter at Noah's Ark -- Chapter 11 With or without Hot? -- Chapter 12 The Followers of Noah - Chapter 13 Beauty and Diversity -- Chapter 14 Visit to the Mosque -- Chapter 15 Visit to the Monastery -- Chapter 16 My Road Map -- Chapter 17 The Abduction from the Seraglio -- Dejà vu -- Chapter 18 Dreams and Reality -- Chapter 19 The Last Mohicans against Globalization -- Chapter 20 Globalization and Freedom -- Chapter 21 Birthday Party -- Halloween -- Chapter 22 Manuela -- Chapter 23 Casablanca -- Little Polar Bear -- My Chcemy Chleba Naszych Dla Dzieci -- Chapter 24 The Accident -- Chapter 25 Mr. AKH and a Piece of Sky -- Chapter 26 The Migratory Birds' Hypothesis -- Integration -- The Whole World is Your Homeland -- Chapter 27 Holidays in the Mountains -- Time to Go On -- The Mountains and the Hope -- Silence of the Mountains -- Meditation -- The Mountains and the Stars -- Farewell to the Mountains -- Chapter 28 Adios Manuela -- Chapter 29 The Court Process -- The Ship without a Compass -- Chapter 30 The Secret of Pinocchio -- Chapter 31 Russian Roulette -- Chapter 32 Life is like a River -- Chapter 33 Dreams and Tears. Ein tadelloses Exemplar. - A long history of poverty, discrimination, colonialism and struggle for social justice has provided, over the last fifty years, the context for the development of a vast amount of critical scholarship targeting marginalization in Brazil: Freireian pedagogics, theology of liberation, critical sociology, anthropology and ethnomathematics, critical social psychology and discourse analysis. Most of this scholarship has unfortunately been accessible only to the Portuguese-speaking readership. This volume presents, for the first time to an international audience, the novel understandings of critical research that have emerged in this frame. While Brazil is entering a new phase of socio-economic and political turmoil, distinguished representatives of the various critical research traditions from all over Brazil explore the voices and practices of those who are usually hardly heard: the helpless, the mentally ill, the landless, the homeless, the voiceless youth, delinquents, indigenous people, the powerless. The volume proposes original theoretical tools and arguments that can inspire social-scientific discussions on facing poverty and marginalization not only with regard to Brazil, but also other parts of the world. These features were introduced in late 19th century to reduce the risk of excessive political influence, corruption, misconduct and instability of government. Today, however, numerous administrative and managerial reforms are affecting these longstanding aspects of public employment. Size and composition of workforce, its working and employment conditions, nature of work, and values and legal status are all undergoing a process of change. The various reforms are also gradually shrinking the size of central public administrations of the EU-27 Member States. They are becoming more decentralised and fragmented, more diversified, more aligned and less specific. The on-going financial crisis and the introduction of hasty austerity measures have a strong impact on the public workforce in most EU Member States. So far, restructuring programmes and effects of austerity measures have not been a subject of rigorous scrutiny. Similarly, the effects of public management reforms have not been studied either and have resulted in national administrations having no longer a single coherent framework. Filling this important gap, this comparative study attempts to assess the effects of these developments in public employment in the central public administrations of the EU Member States offering insight into the future of public employment. - Contents: 1 Introduction -- 2 Methodology -- 3 Definition of status in the Member States of the EU - 3.1 Public law status - 3.2 Status as social or professional standing - 3.3 Status as public service ethos - 3.4 Conclusions -- 4 Status in a time perspective: reform factors and reform pressures - 4.1 Status in a historical context -- 4.2 From public administration to public management and governance: implications for the public status - 4.3 Change of work and work ethos - from status to virtual workplaces - 4.4 Governance and public employment restructuring: new instruments, what effects? -- 5 Change of employment and employment conditions -- 6 Restructuring public workforce and the impact of austerity measures: towards a new employment structure? -- 7 Trend towards more flexible employment features and its impact on central public administration -- 8 EU law: limits to flexibility and flexible employment contracts -- 9 Future relationship between civil servants and other public employees -- 9.1 Distinction between civil servants and other public employees - 9.2 Sectors o f civil service employment - 9.3 Reserve of certain functions to civil servants: a new blurring of boundaries -- 10 Conclusions. They effectively test the political, traditional sources of meaning, and reservoirs of identity. The post-religiousness of the presentness is transcendentally neutral; there is no contradiction between the transcendental and the immanent. Why and how relics steal into the political? The social does not create any meaning considerably stronger than the empty meanings of dedicated metaphysics and discourses, but the social creates itself within the totariental (total poleless disorienting). The book contains analyses of the implementation of political crises and crises of the political. In other words, two processes are simultaneously used by political actors in contemporary democracy. These tools are not only moderators of naturally spontaneous democracy. Economic, cultural, and political changes are pressed ahead by technically, sociologically and military equipped actors for whom democracy is efficient. Although it is a pragmatic instruction on mission, it puzzles us like the Apostles in the Upper Room. The Lord shortly before his arrest, asserting the importance of the teaching, mandates preparedness for mission in the post-resurrectional period of the Church. The shepherd must be prepared to defend the sheep under his/her care, even to the extent of being called "lawless" according to world standards. Lk 22:35-38 thus in no way contradicts the prior mission training sendings, rather endows the missionary with greater strategic responsibility and commitment in pastoral care. The book highlights the contextual, hermeneutical, and theological dimensions in the final teaching of Jesus in the Lukan narration. - Table of Contents: General Introduction -- Chapter One. Analysing the uses of the evolutionary discourse in recent literature and films, the study demonstrates how natural science influences the contemporary humanities and how literary conventions are used to make scientific and popular-science texts intelligible and attractive. This country is especially interesting, as the German corporate governance system is considered less investor-friendly with a limited influence of shareholders on managerial decisions. Based on the incentive structure of family blockholders and their influence in corporate boards, the four studies offer a novel approach to analyzing the financial behavior of family firms. They use a hand-collected panel dataset identifying blockholders and every board position in 278 corporations. The dissertation demonstrates that the degree of family involvement in boards significantly influences working capital and earnings management as well as stock market performance and provides contributions for academia and practitioners alike. In the face of pervasive racial inequality and segregation, most white people cannot answer that question. In the second edition of this seminal text, Robin DiAngelo reveals the factors that make this question so difficult: mis-education about what racism is; ideologies such as individualism and colorblindness; segregation; and the belief that to be complicit in racism is to be an immoral person. These factors contribute to what she terms white racial illiteracy. Speaking as a white person to other white people, DiAngelo clearly and compellingly takes readers through an analysis of white socialization. Weaving research, analysis, stories, images, and familiar examples, she provides the framework needed to develop white racial literacy. She describes how race shapes the lives of white people, explains what makes racism so hard to see, identifies common white racial patterns, and speaks back to popular narratives that work to deny racism. Written as an accessible overview on white identity from an anti-racist framework, What Does It Mean to Be White? is an invaluable resource for members of diversity and anti-racism programs and study groups, and students of sociology, psychology, education, and other disciplines. This revised edition features two new chapters, including one on DiAngelo's influential concept of white fragility. Written to be accessible both within and without academia, this revised edition also features discussion questions, an index, and a glossary. - CONTENTS: Introduction -- Chapter 1: Race in Education -- Chapter 2: Unique Challenges of Race Education -- Chapter 3: Socialization -- Chapter 4: Defining Terms -- Chapter 5: The Cycle of Oppression -- Chapter 6: What Is Race? -- Chapter 7: What Is Racism? -- Chapter 8: "New" Racism -- Chapter 9: How Race Shapes the Lives of White People -- Chapter 10: What Makes Racism So Hard for Whites to See? -- Chapter 11: Intersecting Identities-An Example of Class -- Chapter 12: Common Patterns of Well-Meaning White People -- Chapter 13: White Fragility -- Chapter 14: Popular White Narratives That Deny Racism -- Chapter 15: Stop Telling That Story!
