The topic of dynamic models tends to be splintered across various disciplines, making it difficult to uniformly study the subject. Moreover, the models have a variety of representations, from traditional mathematical notations to diagrammatic and immersive depictions. Collecting all of these expressions of dynamic models, the Handbook of Dynamic System Modeling explores a panoply of different types of modeling methods available for dynamical systems. Featuring an interdisciplinary, balanced approach, the handbook focuses on both generalized dynamic knowledge and specific models. It first introduces the general concepts, representations, and philosophy of dynamic models, followed by a section on modeling methodologies that explains how to portray designed models on a computer. After addressing scale, heterogeneity, and composition issues, the book covers specific model types that are often characterized by specific visual- or text-based grammars. It concludes with case studies that employ two well-known commercial packages to construct, simulate, and analyze dynamic models. A complete guide to the fundamentals, types, and applications of dynamic models, this handbook shows how systems function and are represented over time and space and illustrates how to select a particular model based on a specific area of interest.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the Victorian era - or for non-British readers, the mid-to-late nineteenth century - amateur astronomy tended to center on Solar System objects. The Moon and planets, as well as bright comets, were the key objects of interest. The brighter variable stars were monitored, but photography was in its infancy and digital imaging lay a century in the future. Today, at the start of the twenty-first century, amateurs are better equipped than any professionals of the mid-twentieth century, let alone the nineteenth. An amateur equipped with a 30-cm telescope and a CCD camera can easily image objects below magnitude 20 and, from very dark sites, 22 or 23. Such limits would have been within the realm of the 100- and 200-inch reflectors on Mount Wilson and Mount Palomar in the 1950s, but no other observatories. However, even those telescopes took hours to reach such limits, and then the photographic plates had to be developed, fixed, and examined by eye. In the modern era digital images can be obtained in minutes and analyzed 'on the fly' while more images are being downloaded. Developments can be e-mailed to other interested amateurs in real time, during an observing session, so that when a cataclysmic event takes place amateurs worldwide know about it. As recently as the 1980s, even professional astronomers could only dream of such instantaneous communication and proc- sing ability.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This is a book about the physics of stars and starlight. The story of starlight is truly fascinating. Astronomers analyze and interpret the light from stars using photometry and spectroscopy, then inspirational detective work combines with the laws of physics to reveal the temperatures, masses, luminosities and outer structure of these far away points of light. The laws of physics themselves enable us to journey to the very center of a star and to understand its inner structure and source of energy!Starlight provides an in-depth study of stellar astrophysics that requires only basic high school mathematics and physics, making it accessible to all amateur astronomers. Starlight teaches amateur astronomers about the physics of stars and starlight in a friendly, easy-to-read way. The reader will take away a profoundly deeper understanding of this truly fascinating subject - and find his practical observations more rewarding and fulfilling as a result.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - When Mike Inglis, who consults for Springer, rst asked me to write a Caldwell book in their 'and How to Observe Them' series I admit I did need some time to think the suggestion over. I am a fan of Patrick's Caldwell catalog as are most of the amateur astronomers I know, but could a new book be justi ed when the massive, compreh- sive, and wrist-spraining Caldwell tome by Stephen O'Meara covers the subject fully anyway That other book was researched and written over a 5-year period in the pre-9/11 world from 1996 to 2001, and its 484 pages of descriptive text and background data are a joy to peruse, as are Stephen's impressive sketches. OK, the book is far too heavy for the binding and after a few trips outside half the pages in my copy fell out, but apart from that it is an excellent book and surely impossible to improve upon, or even equal, especially in a smaller format book with only half the pages available; at least, that was my initial impression when I mulled over writing another Caldwell book. However, I changed my mind, because a number of events of astronomical signi cance have occurred in the last 10 years. First and foremost backyard imaging of deep sky objects, especially color im- ing, has come on in leaps and bounds in the twenty- rst century.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - On-orbit operations optimization among multiple cooperative or noncooperative spacecraft, which is often challenged by tight constraints and shifting parameters, has grown to be a hot issue in recent years. The authors of this book summarize related optimization problems into four planning categories: spacecraft multi-mission planning, far-range orbital maneuver planning, proximity relative motion planning and multi-spacecraft coordinated planning. The authors then formulate models, introduce optimization methods, and investigate simulation cases that address problems in these four categories. This text will serve as a quick reference for engineers, graduate students, postgraduates in the fields of optimization research and on-orbit operation mission planning.

This book describes the development of the first cobalt -60 unit in the United States and the man behind it, Leonard Grimmett. Conceptually conceived before World War II it only became possible because of the development of nuclear reactors during the war. The initial idea was to replace the radium in the contemporary units of the time with cobalt-60, but with the realization that the reactors could produce much more cobalt-60 than originally thought the design of the cobalt-60 unit was drastically changed to take advantage that the application of the inverse square law to cancer radiation treatments would make. Although Grimmett conceived of and published his ideas first, the Canadians built the first units because of the capability of their reactor to produce more suitable cobalt-60 sources. The story tells how Grimmett and the other people involved came together at thetime that the U S Atomic Energy Agency was pushing the use of radioactivity in medicine. But Grimmett died suddenly before his unit could be built and very little information about him was known until recently when various documents have come to light, allowing the full story to be told.

These illustrative adjuncts are often profuse and, in many cases, they may be the most striking feature that distinguishes one set of learning materials from another. In addition, the perceived effectiveness of the illustra tions clearly plays an important role in the marketing of many educational materials. Despite this pervasiveness and salience in education, there has never been a systematic effort to bring together the results of research on illustrations in order to provide some level of guidance to the developers of commercial learning materials. There is, however, a considerable research literature that is directly relevant to this aspect of education. The purpose of the present two volume set is to summarize and interpret the existing research literature that deals with the various educational functions of illustrations. In undertaking to produce an omnibus reference work on psychological and instructional issues surrounding illustrated learning material, our paramount aim has been to stimulate closer collaboration between researchers, producers, and users of educational text. The problems associated with moving the findings of educational research into the realm of everyday practice have been perennial ones. While many researchers and practitioners are interested in fundamentally similar questions, they typically speak dissimilar languages, read different jour nals, and carry out their work under disparate ideologies.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The field of human artificial reproductive technology (ART) is continually advancing and has witnessed significant changes since the inception of Louise Brown in 1978. Though Louise Brown herself was conceived after the trans fer of a blastocyst, there remain significant confusion and debate regarding the stage at which the human embryo conceived in the laboratory should be replaced in the mother. Developments in culture media formulations, leading to the introduction of sequential media, have brought the role of the blasto cyst in human ART back into the spotlight. It was due to this resurgence of interest in the niche of extended culture in human infertility treatment that the symposium on 'ART and the Human Blastocyst' was held. of this meeting within this volume bring to the forefront The proceedings the main issues raised with the transfer of embryos at the blastocyst stage. It is evident from the chapters that follow that ART needs to be perceived as a continuum of procedures, each one dependent on the preceding one, and all equally as important as each other. That is to say, the development of a com petent embryo is ultimately dependent on the quality of the gametes from which it was derived. With regard to the oocyte, this then places the emphasis on the physician to use a stimulation protocol that both produces quality oocytes and does not impair endometrial function. Maintenance of gamete and embryo quality is the laboratory's role.

Aggiungi al carrelloTaschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The aim of this book is to develop an understanding and treatment of the problems of inference associated with experiments in science. Many textbooks treat inference as principally the reduction of the sample information to estimates and their marginal distribution and supposedly optimal properties. In contrast, this book emphasizes techniques for dividing the sample information into various parts addressing the diverse problems of inference that arise from repeatable experiments. An unusually valuable feature of the book is the large number of practical examples, many of which use data taken from experiments published in various scientific journals. This book has evolved from the author's courses on statistical inference. It would be a suitable text book for advanced undergraduate, Masters, and Ph.D. statistics students. It can also be used as a reference book. A background knowledge of an introductory course in probability is assumed, including the calculation and manipulation of probability functions and density functions, transformation of variables and the use of Jacobians. The author is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Statistics, University of Waterloo, and Professor of Statistics, Centro de Investigaci=F3n en Matemáticas, Guanajuato, Mexico. He is an Honorary member of the Statistical Society of Canada and a recipient of the Society's Gold Medal for Research. He is also an elected member of the International Statistical Institute and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and of the Royal Society of Canada.

The seminar began to meet in the Spring, 1982 semester at the CUNY Graduate Center in midtown Manhattan, and has been meeting contin uously at the Graduate Center for two decades, even as the Graduate Center moved from its original location on 42nd Street near Fifth Avenue to tempo rary quarters in an office building next to Grand Central Station to a new and elegant building in the former B. Altman department store on Fifth Avenue betwen 34th and 35th Streets. The seminar was originally organized by Harvey Cohn, David and Gregory Chudnovsky, and Melvyn B. Nathanson. In 1982, Harvey Cohn was at City College (CUNY) and the Graduate Center, the Chudnovskys were at Columbia, and Mel Nathanson was at Rutgers. Today, Harvey has retired to California, the Chudnovskys are at Polytechic University of New York, and Nathanson is at Lehman College (CUNY) and the Graduate Center.
