Aggiungi al carrelloCloth, 4to, 34 cm, 326 pp, colour ills. A full-colour commentary volume in Spanish and English, including a full translation of the text of "Theatrum Sanitatis" (from a late-eleventh-century Latin codex) into each language. Theatrum Sanitatis contains a treatise on medicine that was widely disseminated in the 14th and 15th centu…ries. It concerns the six elements necessary for maintaining one's daily health: food and drink, air and the atmosphere, movement and rest, sleep and wakefulness, secretions and excretions, changes and states of mind (happiness, shame, etc). The author believes disease to stem from alterations of these six elements. Each page of the treatise features a miniature of one of these elements and a footnote stating its nature, characteristics of what is deemed to be better or preferable for human health, the benefit it offers, any adverse effects it may have and the remedy for such adverse effects. The illustration of this codex belongs to the Lombard artistic tradition, to the school of Giovanni de Grassi. This book is not only a source of interesting health information but also an iconographical source for the study of very different aspects of life in that period. Contents: Medicine as a Principle of Human Life in Galenism and the 'Tables Of Health' by Ibn Butlan = La Medicina como norma de la Vida Humana en el Galenismo y las 'Tablas de Salud' de Ibn Butlán, by José Ma López Pinero; The Contents of the "Theatrum Sanitatis" in the Casanatense Library = El Contenido del 'Theatrum Sanitatis' de la Biblioteca Casanatense, by José Ma López Pinero; The Illustrations in the "Theatrum Sanitatis" of the Casanatense Library in Rome = Las Ilustraciones del 'Theatrum Sanitatis' de la Biblioteca Casanatense de Roma, by Felipe Jerez Moliner; 'Theatrum Sanitatis' : Translation, by Anne Barton de Mayor and Traducción by José Miguel García Calero. Despite their size, these scenes are incredibly detailed and feature elaborately patterned backgrounds. Created ca. 1400 in Prague, this manuscript contains the 9th century text of the Martyrology of Usuard, written by the monk Usuard (d. 877) at the behest of Charles the Bald. This is a spectacular specimen from the court of King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia (13611419), which was one of the grandest in Europe at the time.' Moleiro. US$3341.

A high quality reproduction of manuscript 'Neerlandais 3' in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris. Profusely illuminated, it is an absolutely exceptional work. It was produced around 1400 in the southern Netherlands. Its iconographic cycle is very similar to that of other 13th-century English Apocalypses ? also told in images. Folio (49 × 35 cm). 252 pages, with 705 miniatures illuminated in gold, in full colour. **** NUMBERED COPY NO. 707 OF A LIMITED FACSIMILE EDITION OF 987 COPIES, ISSUED WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY.**** Acc…ompanied by a commentary volume, hardcover with dust jacket, 407 pages, profusely illustrated in colour (170 illustrations). Size: 38 × 27 cm. Language: Spanish. Condition: Fine. ISBN 9788488526359. The Martyrology of Usuard is a copy of the work completed by Usuard in 860, later updated to include additional saints. Usuard himself was a monk at Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris between 841 and 847, and his journey through Spain in 858 was decisive for the inclusion of many Spanish saints in his text. This remarkable manuscript holds a key place in the history of Central-European painting. Its illuminations reveal strong links with major artistic centres across Europe at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, placing it firmly within the sphere of international courtly art while remaining rooted in the Bohemian tradition of book illumination a true high point in that tradition's long evolution. Before reaching the city of Gerona, the Martyrology had an eventful journey. Originating in Prague, at the court of King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia, it later travelled through Austria, Hungary, and Moravia. It was subsequently found in Rome and Naples, and may even have been housed for a time in Stockholm and Madrid. In 1673, it arrived at the monastery of Poblet in Catalonia, and later was taken to Gerona, where it was first safeguarded in the monastery of Cadins and is now preserved in the Museu Diocesà, where it remains to this day. A masterpiece of the International Gothic from the famous Wenceslas workshop in Prague: the agonizing martyrdoms of the saints in incredible 700 beautiful miniature medallions. 0 g.

The Isabella Breviary is considered the greatest treasure of the British Library. Conceived as the most luxurious of all Flemish breviaries, this extraordinary manuscript stands as a masterpiece of late 15th-century illumination. Each page is exquisitely decorated by the finest Flemish painters, resulting in a work of incomparable beauty and refinement. Among its most celebrated miniatures including The Nativity, The Adoration of the Magi, and Saint Barbara are several executed by the renowned hand of Gérard David. Particular distinction must be given to the Isabella Breviary?s exuberant marginal decoration. It displays a rare combination of modern strewn-flower borders and interwoven acanthus leaves and branches, together with a style that was already uncommon around 1490 blue and gold acanthus scrolls richly adorned with flowers, insects, and birds. 0 g.

Aggiungi al carrelloLimited edition facsimile of 987 numbered copies. Full red leather, 34 x 25 cm; 40 pp 23 full-page illuminations decorated with gold. A very high-quality facsimile edition of the Flemish Apocalypse (or 'Apocalipsis Flamenco'), the original of which is housed in the BNF, Paris, under shelf mark "Neerlandais 3". Dating from the be…ginning of the fifteenth century, this is the only surviving illuminated Apocalypse written in Flemish. A striking feature of the Flemish Apocalypse is the representation of all the events described in a whole chapter in a single image. The manuscript includes 23 full-page illuminations: the first, the text's introduction, represents scenes of the life of St. John: each of the others relates to one of the twenty-two chapters. Another innovative element is the colour palette used for the illuminations, in which dark blue, vermilion, ochre, and a pallid white are strongly featured. White colour outlines buildings, and gives a metallic gleam to the armour. Reds are effectively applied to give prominence to animals and apocalyptic fires. Gold is used throughout the manuscript, highlighting the halos of the Lord, the angels, and St. John against the generally gloomy blue background. A separate commentary volume - not present here - was published by Moleiro in 2005. Copy No. 120. Fine in the publisher's matching clamshell box, which has very minor scuffs and is a trifle faded.

Limited edition of 987 numbered copies. 2 vols, facsimile: original blind-stamped calf, folio, 31 cm; commentary: cloth, 4to, facsimile: 298 pages and 115 miniatures, most heightened in gold, commentary: 496,[1] pp, ills. A superb high-quality facsimile of (and separate commentary on) 'The book of Treasures', which is an encyclo…paedia by Brunetto Latini (circa 1230-1294), a Florentine politician, poet, historian and philosopher, teacher and friend of Dante's, written in French during the author's exile in France (1260-1267). From the publisher's description: " It consists of three books: the first begins with the biblical history, the history of Troy, Rome and the Middle Ages, followed by a natural history: a comprehensive compilation of information about astronomy and geography. It also addresses certain animal and bird species in depth. The second book concerns ethics: it features the thinking of modern and classical moralists, and studies the vices and virtues that characterise humanity. The third book, the most original part of this work, deals with matters related to politics and the art of government which is, according to the author, the most important and noblest of all sciences. The miniatures in this codex are extremely rich and varied. The artist's boundless imagination fills the margins of the 18 folios with countless arabesques and drolleries which constitute one of the most highly developed, most interesting and earliest series of this genre in the history of the European miniature. There are also countless beasts, grotesque and peculiar figures, dwarves up to all sorts of tricks, acrobats doing balancing acts and juggling, musicians playing trumpets, flutes, violas, tambourines, organs and bagpipes. Birds, hares, fawns, lions and hounds hunting boars, and even the creation of Eve are depicted too." The commentary volume includes (in both English and Spanish): Foreword, by V.N. Zaitsev (Director of the National Library of Russia, St Petersburg); Codicological and palaeographic study of Li Livres dou Tresor by Brunetto Latini, by L.I. Kisseleva (National Library of Russia, St Petersburg); Artistic and iconographical traits of the St Petersburg manuscript, by I.P. Mokretsova (State Research Institute for Restoration (GosNIIR)); The animal chapters in the Saint Petersburg Li Livres dou Tresor, by W.B. The codex was produced in France in the late 15th century for Count Charles of Angoulême and his wife Louise of Savoy. It is remarkable not merely for the beauty of its illuminations, but also for its content: it presents the accumulated European medieval knowledge of the animal, vegetable and mineral substances used to cure or relieve disease. The codex contains 220 pages of text arranged in five parts: herbs and flowers, trees and their gums and resins, metals and minerals, animal products and other matters, together with by a splendid, 116-page atlas containing 386 figures. The core of the text is a French translation of the compendium attributed to Matthaeus Platearius, with the addition of chapters from works of the following three centuries, a period when the knowledge of medicinal substances increased, based on the translations produced mainly in Toledo. The atlas - which may have been produced by the great artist Robinet Testard - gathers together medieval illustrations of a diagrammatic nature or bearing no resemblance to reality with other realistic illustrations belonging to the Renaissance 'back to nature' movement. Most of them depict medicinal plants and, to a lesser extent, curative animal or mineral products, although some scenes portray people gathering them. The St Petersburg codex is interestingly annotated, by two physicians who handled the codex in the 16th century. They were both of a clearly Renaissance outlook and had editions in Greek and direct Latin translations of books on medicine from classical antiquity. They consequently deemed the original terms of the codex to be "barbaric" and added others in Greek and Latin, sometimes together with comments. The commentary volume has the following principal contents (which are presented in Spanish as well as in English): From the Editor to the Reader = Del Editor al Lector; Le Livre Des Simple Medecines, Codex of the National Library of Russia = El Códice Le Livre des Simples Medecines, de la Biblioteca Nacional de Rusia, by José María López Piñero; Codicological Study = Estudio Codicologico, by Natacha Elaguina; The Illustrations in the Livre des Simples Médecines of the National Library of Russia = Las Ilustraciones del Livre des Simples Médecines de la Biblioteca Nacional de Rusia, by Carlos Miranda García; Le Livre des Simples Medecines, Traducción Anotada, by María Luz López Tetrada; Bibliography = Bibliografía. Facsimile Copy No. 63. Fine in the publisher's matching solander box (41 x 32 cm), which is also Fine. And with the separate commentary volume, Fine in Near Fine dustwrapper.
