Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 2 volumes. Both bound in full leather. All the boards are detached except for the back cover of the second volume. Titles printed in gold on maroon spine labels. Volume 1 has 251 pages. Volume 2 has 249 pages. The text block of volume 1 is cracked at page 144/145, though it's holding together at the moment. There is a charming pencil doodle on the first blank page of the first volume with a caption, "The two unfortunate Ladies." It shows two women with long hair and fine dresses. A story of the same name appears on page 114. Previous owner's name on the title page, "Anne Greaves." Another pencil drawing on the final blank page - this one a portrait of a woman in profile, against a black background. Same owner's name in the front of the second volume. Marmontel was a French scholar and writer who achieved some success before the Revolution and still managed to survive it. He died in 1799. This copy of his Moral Tales has been translated into English. It was first published in France in 1765.

Aggiungi al carrelloTwo volumes bound and printed as one, 12mo in sixes, pp. 151; 147; first two leaves of volume II torn and repaired, without loss; a few minor stains; in modern half morocco, spine lettered in gilt. An early edition, but with a false imprint the list of booksellers is fictional. Although the volumes have separate pagination and signatures, they were almost certainly printed as one continuous process: volume I ends on N4, and volume II begins with A1-2, then moves to signature B, so I suspect that A1-2 are in fact N5-6.

Age related wear to extremities, including edges and corners. Browning of pages and foxing throughout, with a few small margin tears; otherwise a very good copy. Early copperplate gift inscription at head of title. Decorated by headpiece vignettes. Translation of a French work of fiction based on the life of the great Byzantine general, Belisarius (c.505-565) under the Emperor Justinian. It provides an allegory of bad treatment by an ungrateful ruler and indicates the author's support for religious toleration, for which it was banned in France. First published as Belisaire in 1767 and in English translation in the same year.
