Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -A long and varied experience in many areas of electronic circuit design has convinced me that capacitors are the most misunderstood and misused electronic component. This book provides practical guidance in the understanding, construction, use, and application of capacitors. Theory, combined with circuit application advice, will help to under stand what goes on in each component and in the final design. All chapters are arranged with the theory of the dielectric type discussed first, followed by circuit application information. With all chapters arranged in the same manner, this will make reading and using this book for reference easier. A practical glossary of terms used in the capacitor industry is included. The first chapter covers basic information that applies to all types of capacitors. Each following chapter addresses a different capacitor dielectric. This book could have been titled: 'Everything You Wanted To Know About Capacitors, But Were Afraid To Ask . .' ix Preface THE CAPACITOR HANDBOOK Chapter 1 Fundamentals For All Capacitors For all practical purposes, consider only the parallel plate capacitor as illustrated in Fig. 1.1-two conductors or electrodes separated by a dielectric material of uniform thickness. The conductors can be any material that will conduct electricity easily. The dielectric must be a poor conductor-an insulator. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -Most of the chapters in this book are extended papers from Research Learning in Virtual Environments (reLIVE08), an international conference held by the UK Open University in Milton Keynes in November 2008. Authors of the best papers and presentations from the conferences were invited to contribute to Research Learning in Virtual Worlds, the first book to specifically address research methods and related issues for education in virtual worlds. The book covers a range of research undertaken in virtual worlds. It opens with an accessible introduction both to the book and to the subject area, making it an ideal springboard for those who are new to research in this area. The subsequent ten chapters present work covering a range of research methodologies across a broad discipline base, providing essential reading for advanced undergraduate or postgraduate researchers working in education in virtual worlds, and engaging background material for researchers in similar and related disciplines.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Rapid progress in analytical methods, within the past few decades, has led to the widespread applications of newer immunological and radioimmunoassay techniques to the diagnosis and treatment of hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders. Major advances were made to meet the multiple challenges of improving precision, accuracy, and availability of various measurements. These advances have been paralleled by the discoveries of a close relationship between biological activities and the absolute concentration of proteins that were measured by immunological techniques. This, in turn, assured the significance and usefulness of immunological methods in the management of patients. Numerous variants of immunological tests now are available, which allow us to both determine with precision minute quantities of antigenic proteins in serum and other biological fluids and differentiate the native protein from its genetically altered or degraded forms. Methods also have been designed to immunologically evaluate some serine proteases that are in complex with proteolytic inhibitors. Due to rapid progress in this field, different laboratories unavoidably become experts in one or the other approach. In the welter of possible choices, the non-expert usually is left to follow either the most recent but as yet to be confirmed method or his own anecdotal experience. This manual not only brought together various methods in current use, but it also set certain standardized criteria for the assessment of various deficiencies and abnormalities in hemostasis.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Evolutionary Biology, of which this is the twenty-first volume, continues to offer its readers a wide range of original articles, reviews, and com mentaries on evolution, in the broadest sense of that term. The topics of the reviews range from anthropology and behavior to molecular biology and systematics. In recent volumes, a broad spectrum of articles have appeared on such subjects as evolution of the bacterial genome, biochemical system atics in plants, a discussion of species selection, and development and evolution of the vertebrate limb. Articles such as these, often too long for standard journals, are the material for Evolutionary Biology. The editors continue to solicit manuscripts on an international scale in an effort to see that everyone ofthe many facets of biological evolution is covered. Manuscripts should be sent to anyone of the following: Max K. Hecht, Department of Biology, Queens College of the City University of New York, Flushing, New York 11367; Bruce Wallace, Department of Biology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacks burg, Virginia 24061; or Ghillian T. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Volume 3 continues the approach carried out in the first two volumes of this se ries of publishing articles on membrane methodology which include, in addition to procedural details, incisive discussions of the ap plications of the methods and of their limitations. Wh at is the theoretical basis of the method, how and to what problems can it be applied, how does one interpret the results, what has thus far been achieved by the method, what lies in the future-these are the questions the authors have tried to answer. No area of membrane biology engages the interest of more investigators than studies of the plasma membrane. Four chapters in this volume are concerned with one or more aspects of the cell surface. Fundamental to all studies of the cell surface are the isolation and characterization of pure plasma membranes. Many preparations described in the literature are inadequate or are inadequately characterized. In the first chapter, Neville discusses the theoretical and practical bases of tissue fractionation, empha sizes the variations in enzyme content among plasma membranes from different sources, offers guidance in the choice of the proper criteria for assessing membrane purity, and suggests the best markers for detecting the possible presence of contaminating organelles. To review in detail each of the many preparations of plasma membranes that have been published is impossible.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This volume continues the tradition of SUBCELLULAR BIOCHEMISTRY of trying to break down interdisciplinary barriers in the study of cell function and of bringing the reader's attention to less well studied, but nevertheless useful, biological systems. We start with an extensive article by T. P. Karpetsky, M. S. Boguski and C. C. Levy on the structure, properties and possible functions of polyadenylic acid. Apart from revealing a general lack of appreciation of many important aspects of the chemical properties of poly adenylic acid, the literature also shows that there is a great gulf between those who study the biological role of polyadenylic acid. and those who study its physicochemi cal properties. The article by Karpetsky and his colleagues is an attempt to overcome this lack of communication and to present an integrated view of the subject. The authors go into the subject in full detail and the more biologically inclined reader may on occasion have to reread his nucleic acid physical chemistry notes! However, the effort is worthwhile and the article is a timely reminder that we cannot treat nucleic acids as mere abstractions, but that they are complex organic macromolecules capable of equally complex, but nevertheless important, interactions. The next article is by J. Steensgaard and N. P. Hundahl M0ller and deals with computer simulation of density gradient centrifugation systems.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The first volume of Evolutionary Biology was published thirteen years ago. Since that time thirteen volumes and one supplement have appeared. As stated in earlier prefaces, we are continuing the focus of this series on critical reviews, commentaries, original papers, and controversies in evolu tionary biology. It is our aim to publish papers primarily of greater length than normally published by society journals and quarterlies. We therefore invite colleagues to submit chapters that fall within the focus and standards of Evolutionary Biology. The editors regretfully announce that Dr. William C. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) \* at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This is the third volume of the comprehensive series on Struc ture and Function of the Circulation, edited by Dr. Colin J. Schwartz with the collaboration of Nicholas T. Werthessen and Stewart Wolf. Dr. Schwartz, an authority on vascular structure and function and a respected investigator in this field for many years, selected as authors for the chapters an outstanding group of scientists from various parts of the world. As indicated in the Preface, the impetus for this broad treat ise evolved from the scientific sessions of three interdisciplinary international conferences held in Lindau in 1970, in Heidelberg in 1973, and Totts Gap, Pennsylvania, in 1976 as well as from numerous informal discussions. The subjects dealt with in these three volumes range from the roots of our knowledge in ancient history to the most recent inform ation on contractile proteins of smooth muscle cells. The structure, distribution, and dynamics of arteries, veins, and lymphatics are described in chapters on the systemic circulation as well as that of the heart, the vessels themselves, the brain, nerves, and viscera. Descriptions of ultrastructure, histochemistry, metabolism, and func tion of endothelium and of vascular smooth muscle and of vascular changes in aging are all included in the vast scope of this under taking.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware -This monograph is the r st in Fuzzy Approximation Theory. It contains mostly the author s research work on fuzziness of the last ten years and relies a lot on [10]-[32] and it is a natural outgrowth of them. It belongs to the broader area of Fuzzy Mathematics. Chapters are self-contained and several advanced courses can be taught out of this book. We provide lots of applications but always within the framework of Fuzzy Mathematics. In each chapter is given background and motivations. A c- plete list of references is provided at the end. The topics covered are very diverse. In Chapter 1 we give an extensive basic background on Fuzziness and Fuzzy Real Analysis, as well a complete description of the book. In the following Chapters 2,3 we cover in deep Fuzzy Di erentiation and Integ- tion Theory, e.g. we present Fuzzy Taylor Formulae. It follows Chapter 4 on Fuzzy Ostrowski Inequalities. Then in Chapters 5, 6 we present results on classical algebraic and trigonometric polynomial Fuzzy Approximation.

Neuware - R. B. McConnell During the past 10 years three international symposia on coeliac disease have been held. The first was in London in 1969, the second in Leiden in 1973 and the third in Galway in 1977. At each there were contributions on the familial, hereditary or genetic aspects of the disease but because all features of the condition were being considered at the symposia there was not the time for detailed discussion of the genetic aspects. These three international symposia were sponsored by Mr Jeremiah Milner and Welfare Foods (Stockport) Limited. During 1978 Mr Milner and I were aware of intensive studies being at various centres in Europe and America on the genetics of made coeliac disease, and we decided that to bring these teams together and let the members spend a whole day discussing the genetics of coeliac disease might well result in a valuable exchange of data and ideas; the discussions could also point to the most potentially fruitful avenues for further research. Professor Charlotte Anderson, Dr C. C. Booth and Professor Ciaron McCarthy joined Mr, Milner and me in forming a Steering Committee, and the International Symposium on the Genetics of Coeliac Disease was held in the Liverpool Medical Institution on 28 and 29 November 1979.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Prior and subsequentto the publication of the third edition of the Diagnos tic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III), we have witnessed a considerable upsurge in the quantity and quality of research concerned with the psychiatric diagnostic process. There are several factors that have contributed to this empirical influx, including improved diagnostic cri teria for many psychiatric disorders, increased nosological attention to childhood psychopathology, and development and standardization of several structured diagnostic interview schedules for both adult and child populations. With the advent of DSM-III-R, and in anticipation of DSM-IV, diagnostic labels and their definitions have been in a state of change, as evinced by the many refinements and modifications currently taking place. However, the basic purpose or raison d'etre of the nosological scheme has not been altered. Psychiatric diagnosis is the means by which we classify or categorize human psychopathology. And, as is the case in the medical arena, psychiatric diagnosis serves three central functions: classification. communication. and prediction. As research accumulates, our understanding of psychiatric disorders increases, and we are in a much better position to classify reliably and with validity, as well as to com municate and predict Despite periodic changes in the diagnostic system, the basic strategies for conducting diagnostic research (e. g. , genetic-family studies, biological markers, follow-up studies, etc. ) do not vary appreciably over time. But in over one decade no scholarly book has appeared that tackles the essential research issues involved in upgrading the diagnostic endeavor.

The first meeting was held in Verona, (Italy) in 1982 and the organisers feIt that, with a number of recent developments including the. withdrawal of a num ber of new anti-inflammatory drugs, and concern being expressed in the lay and specialist medical press and other media about the safety of these drugs, that it was appl'Qpriate to have a second such meeting. The meeting was attended by some 300 delegates and the dis cussion focussed most intently on the recent issues, . e. g. the value of adverse drug reaction reporting of the non-. steroidal anti inflammatory (NSAI) drugs, certain side-effects associated with particular NSAI drugs, the predictive value of animal models etc. Organising a meeting de novo without outside help would not have been possible without the immensely valuable help given en thusiastica1ly by people and financial assistance given most generously by those pharmaceutical companies listed below. These financial contributions were given despite current economic dif ficulties and moves to restrict the proportion of profits towards educational actlvities.

Neuware - This volume contains summaries of most of the invited presentations given by lecturers and participants at the NATO Advanced Study Institute, 'Develop mental Neurobiology of Vision,' held in Rethymnon, Crete, Greece 18-27 Sep tember 1978. The purpose of this meeting was to enable a relatively small international group of scientists and students to hold discussions and to present their views on current problems in the field. It was intended that the results of the exchanges would be conveyed to others in the native countries of the parti cipants. An attempt was made to obtain broad representation of disciplines within the area of the Institute and this is reflected in the diversity of the chapters in this book. Considerable interest has been generated in recent years concerning the development and plasticity of vision. Perhaps not unexpectedly, along with the high level of activity in this field, there have been so me controversial findings.

The delays in publication of the second volume are the result of reorganization of the American Solar Energy Society, and the negotiation of a new publishing arrangement. Beginning with this volume, Advances is now published jointly by the Society and Plenum Press. The Editorial Board has been enlarged to be more representative of the different fields of solar energy conversion. Production of Advances is being expedited through the use of modern word processing equipment and the 'lEX typesetting-editing program. We have gone to a single-column format to ease the problems of presenting long equations, and we expect that the user of the volume will find it easy to read. The use of 'lEX will make last minute updates possible. The external appearance of the volume matches that of Volume 1. We expect that future volumes of this annual will be proceeding on schedule. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - The dynamic state of developments within the field of the vasoactive polypeptides is reflected in the continuous series of publications appearing on this topic Thus, the proposal to con o vene another symposium only two years after the 1969 Fiesole Symposium (Plenum Press, 1970) was received enthusiastically and with high expectation. Enthusiasm was based, undoubtedly, in part on meeting together once again in the very pleasant surroundings of Florence with most gracious and enchanting hosts. The 25th International Congress on Physiological Sciences held in Munich the following week also provided the impetus for the organization of this satellite symposium on vasopeptides. However, the accelerated pace of research in the 'kinin' field was the major motivating force for the symposium. It was felt necessary to inform each other of the many advances that were taking place in the varied aspects of this specialized but impor tant field o The role of kinins in both physicologic and pathologic processes still remains to be elucidated definitively. Thus, these proceedings contain new and unpublished informa tion on the chemistry, biochemistry, physicology, pharmacology, as well as pathophysiology of vasopeptides. Recent data on &tructure activity relationships of kinin analogues are complemented by a description of radioimmunoassay techniques for kinins, and studies on the site of synthesis of substrates for kinin-forming enzymes.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This book is formulated from the papers presented at the International Symposium on 'Membrane Biochemistry and Bioenergetics,' held at the Rensselaerville Institute, Rensselaerville, New York, August 1986, in honor of Tsoo E. King on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of reconstitution of arespiratory chain system by Professor David Keilin and Tsoo E. King. Professor Tsoo E. King, to whom this volume is dedicated, has made enormous contributions to the field of isolation and reconstitution of membrane proteins and has continued to explore the frontiers of bioener getics. In particular, his persistent proposals on the existence of ubiquinone binding proteins from conceptualization to experimentation eventually convinced many scientists to study these proteins further . Professor King's preparation of reconstitutively active succinate dehydrogenase opened a new avenue in the fie1d of membrane bioenergetics, and his work has been greatly appreciated. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together scientists from diverse disciplines related to membrane bioenergetics to discuss the recent developments in the field. This symposium, initiated by the Capital District Bioenergetics Group, was attended by 100 scientists, 80 of whom presented their recent discoveries. The symposium was arranged in a sequence of platform lectures, poster presentations and discussion sessions so that all the participants had opportunities to discuss the subjects presented. Most of the participants contributed a chapter to this volume. We would like to express our regret to many other scientists including Professor King's friends, colleagues and students who could not attend due to various reasons.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - This volume constitutes the Proceedings of the November 8-10, 1982 Conference on EMERGENT PROCESS METHODS FOR HIGH TECHNOLOGY CERAMICS, held at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It was the nineteenth in a series of 'University Conferences on Ceramic Sci ence' initiated in 1964 by four institutions of which North Carolina State University is a charter member, along with the University of California at Berkeley, Notre Dame University, and the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. More recently, ceramic oriented faculty in departments at the Pennsylvania State University and Case-Western Reserve University have joined the four initial institutions as permanent members of the consortium. These research oriented conferences, each uniquely concerned with a timely ceramic theme, have been well attended by audiences which typically were both international and interdisciplinary in character; their published Proceedings have been well received and are frequently cited. This three day conference addressed the fundamental scientific background as well as the technological state-of-the-art of several novel methods which are beginning to influence present and future directions for non-traditional ceramic processing, thus affecting many of the advanced ceramic materials needed for a wide variety of research and industrial applications. The number, the importance and the application of new ceramic processing techniques have expanded considerably during the last ten years.
