Extremities worn and rubbed and front hinge starting to crack. Scattered foxing and some ink margin stains, but otherwise a very good copy. A systematic survey of Christian communities in Asia - India and the Middle East - from an Anglican and evangelical viewpoint. The author critically examines the 'Hindoos' (particularly with respect to the rite of 'Juggernaut'), the Ceylonese, the Malays, the Syrian and the Romish (i.e. Roman Catholic) Christians in India, the Persians, the Arabians and the Armenians. He also discusses the role of the Jews in Asia and the question of the ecclesiastical establishment of British India. Claudius Buchanan (1766-1815) was a Scottish missionary ordained in the Church of England. As Vice-Provost of the College of Fort William in Calcutta he was particularly concerned with organising the translation of the Scriptures into oriental languages. The book became a best seller on its first publication in 1811 and continued to be republished until 1849, becoming an influential title in the US.
