John Lemprière (c. 1765 1824) was an English classical scholar, lexicographer, theologian, teacher and headmaster. In 1787, he was invited by Valpy to be assistant headmaster at Reading Grammar School, and in 1789, to the great pride of his father, he preached in St Helier, Jersey. He achieved renown for his Bibliotheca Classica or Classical Dictionary containing a full Account of all the Proper Names mentioned in Ancient Authors (Reading, November 1788), which, edited by various later scholars, long remained a readable if not absolutely trustworthy reference book in mythology and classical history. Provenance: no signatures or bookplates. Approximately 8 ¾ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine fair to good condition gilt titles to a black label, very worn and rubbed raised bands with gilt decoration to the compartments. Joints poor condition cracked or cracking with the front board hanging on. Corners good condition rubbed, bumped and worn. Boards good condition polished calf leather with gilt filets and blind decoration. Page edges good condition top edge darkened, all faded, marbled. See above and photos. Internally Hinges poor condition cracked through to the front, holding to the rear. Paste downs good condition marbled. End papers good condition marbled. Title good condition tanned. Pages good condition title, preface, Chronological Table from the creation of the world to the Fall Of The Roman Empire in the West and in the East, text in two columns, at the rear of the book there are 13 pages of measure of length from different countries, tanned and foxed throughout.
