This book examines the history, composition, and deployment of flags throughout the ages, from ancient Egyptian standards to the flags of British regiments. The author traces the evolution of flags from their origins as military rallying points to their modern-day use as symbols of national identity. The book explores different types of flags, including royal standards, banners, and national flags, as well as their significance and cultural impact. Through the analysis of colors, designs, and symbols, the author highlights the stories behind the flags and the historical events they represent. Moreover, the book examines the role of flags in warfare, diplomacy, and international relations, demonstrating how they have shaped the course of history and fostered a sense of unity and patriotism. Ultimately, this book provides an engaging and informative account of the rich history and symbolism of flags, shedding light on their enduring importance as emblems of identity and national pride. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good -. First Edition. 1866. First edition. x, 188pp. (the index on pages 177 to 182 is bound in out of place at the end of the book), 74 small illustrations in the text (2 hand-coloured) and 2 identical plates showing the proposed Arms of the City of Glasgow with supporters and crest. All edges gilt. This history of the armorial bearings of the City of Glasgow is the result of an inquiry made by John Blackie Jun. (1805-1873), a Scottish publisher and the "son" of Blackie & Son. He served as Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1863 to 1866. The author was Andrew Macgeorge (1810-1891), an antiquarian writer and historian who was born in Glasgow. He was skilled in heraldry, and as an antiquary he contributed important papers to the Archaeological Society of Glasgow. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling on the spine, gold titling with a gold illustration of the Arms of the City on the front board and gold titling with the Blackie crest on the rear board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling to the boards. The top corners and spine ends are bumped. The contents are tight and clean although the book has foxing to most of the pages. The foxing is generally light to moderate although some of the pages and the rear free endpapers are more heavily affected. The free endpapers, presentation page preceding the title-page and the title-page are browned. The second front free endpaper bears the following handwritten inscription: "To Bailie William Taylor with compliments from John Blackie Junior". A name, place and date (1929) has been written in pencil on the first front free endpaper. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.

Williamson of Lamas to front flyleaf, WITH PRESENTATION LETTER FROM STIRLING MAXWELL TIPPED IN, addressed to A MacGeorge, dated Dec 20 1866 Mr Dear Sir, I have to thank you very much for the beautiful book on the Armorial Insignia of Glasgow you have been so good as to send me. It is especially interesting to me as I have long been a collector of books relating to Emblems & Devices including Heraldry & a volume of such perfect execution and [?] society is indeed a very valuable accession to my shelves. I beg your acceptance of a volume of similar character that I have just printed by Photozincography Examples of the Ornamental Heraldry of the Sixteenth Century. Some of them are unpublished and almost all of them very rare. It shows what that art may hope to accomplish in spreading a knowledge of the old [?]. Believe me yours faithfully and gratefully. The recipient, Andrew Macgeorge, was a graduate of Glasgow University, and himself a writer and historian. A very attractive association.
